Ouch! When did this happen?

I had never seen your picture and just assumed you had a mole or something on your eyelid. I would have been a teeny weeny itsy bitsy more sensitive in my reply had I known you were actually bleeding and it wasn't just your brake fluid that was bleeding all over the place.

The downside of getting hurt is that progress grinds to a halt while you're financing the doctor's next adventure vacation. Are they going to be able to unroll the lens?

It is good to not be blind...

Stay that way...

It's great to have friends -- so much better than enemas (plural of enemy).

Andy, that happened in August 2012 when I was a young and careless lad of 67.

After my accident at age 20 I have done everything I can to get the best health insurance available. Other than the ~$10K a year for Medicare, Supplemental Plan F, Part D drug coverage and Long Term Care insurance this didn't cost me a dime (OK, $60 co-pay for the tiniest bottle of eyedrops I've ever seen).
Noo doubt about that. Hope all heals well.
Simon, it took 15 days to heal to this (I'm "looking left")...
Eye20Injury201520Days_zpsohwdtw9i.jpg

...and 60 days to this new "normal." The iris closed a bit but you can see it still looks like I'm on something (and "looking right").
Eye%20Injury%2061%20Days_zpsiinsgnat.jpg

Me to!

Bob hope you get back to as close to normal as you can get!
Sub, I think I made it back to Bob Heine Normal, which is more a state of mind than a place, like Normal, Illinois.
:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

HA HA HA HA HA ROFLMAOAKBIHSM!

You used Bob and Normal in the same sentence and made it work:thumbup::thumbup:

I'm impressed:bowdown:
I was too!

Stewart, does this mean I have to attend your "Safely Moving a Big Battery" class again? :bitchslap
believe you me, just a pure stroke of luck on my part for that to have happened.

glad to bring a smile to your face!:)
Sub, if you're not laughing and having a good time, life is just one long trail of tears. Every time I envy someone's life it turns out they only took a different path that's not easier or better, just different. Love the life you have -- it's the only one you're going to get!

Damn, I think I hurt myself getting off that soapbox!

Bob,

Your stories get crazier every time I come in here. I finally got me some squeeze bottles. Amazon had a deal of the day on one I had on my wish list. Got 6 for 10.99. So I bought them and I built a caddy for them to haul between the garage and the shed. Thought you would like to see it.

Dang! Similar thing happened to me though I got it right in the kisser. Split lip and bleeding gums. Stupid trees!

Close call... otherwise known as a timely reminder. I’ve also had my own reminders - safety glasses stay on!(mostly repeated for my own benefit) Now carry 2 pairs when working outside in the heat for just this reason, so I can swap one out for the other if it fills with sweat or fogs up.

Glad you walked away from it though. Halloween selfie, new battle scars and extra character points for the win.

That make me squeamish..

Ouch... Hope it heals quickly!
Still makes me say euhow...... Well I am sure you know what I am trying to say. Looking better.
Steve, Andrew and Simon, my apologies for grossing everyone out but making a living in an office environment and being raised by a couple of teachers, I never got the 'safety first' habit like I should have.

Every year I check the Darwin Awards to be sure I'm not in a headline, story or footnote.

Bret, sometimes I wonder if getting out of bed is a good idea. I get my coffee, go in the office, check my e-mail and then get GJ. I rarely hurt myself doing this. Someone, somewhere on GJ shows a neat tool, project or accomplishment. Once in a great while I go out and imitate one of those things and that's when things turn ugly.

I expect you'll use that caddie often. It's rare that I go in the garage and don't use one of those squeeze bottles. That caddie looks great and you obviously have a much better memory than me. If my squeeze bottle rack wasn't screwed to the wall, it could be anywhere.

Losing things bothers me a little but when my wife sees me looking for something, she wants to help find it and that bothers me a lot. Seconds after she starts looking in the garage, I hear the dreaded words "What's this?"
.

  1. I have no idea what that is or why I have it...... I can't throw it out because it looks important (we're talking about a small hand tool).
  2. It's part of that welder you gave me for my birthday (hopefully it looks "weldy")
  3. I bought that a couple of years ago to fix the Corvette brakes (true story).
.
"Why didn't you borrow Ron's?"

You know we're no longer looking for the thing I lost. One of us is on a treasure hunt for all the stuff I Amazon has delivered to the house.

Guster, I don't trust trees. They sit there all innocent looking until you are standing under one. Then they drop something on you or they have one of their furry or feathered friends do it for them.

I bought a half-dozen DeWalt tinted safety glasses. One pair is in my office close to the front door, another is in the master bedroom next to the sliding door to the porch and a third is in the top of the toolbox next to the garage man door. There are two pair of DeWalt goggles hanging from the regulator on the compressor, along with earmuffs. There are two face shields on the rack next to the bench in the garage and two more in the workshop. One workshop shield hangs from the handle of the drill press and the other hangs on the radial arm saw (and bench buffer). The three additional pairs of safety glasses hang from the portaband saw and one on each shelf next to the two bench grinders.

It's still possible I won't wear the safety equipment but they get in the way enough that it hasn't happened for quite a while. Maybe just hang copies of that first eyeball picture over the workbenches.
Nice Caddy Bret!

You're right Andy but will it go 0 to 60 in 4 seconds?

Absolutely, when you get mad and hurl it across the shop it should do 0-60 in about 3.14159265358979 seconds, just as easy as pie.:eyecrazy:

(feel free to check me, I learned it to 15 places in 1971 and apparently it has not changed)

Oh my goodness, you've hit it in one..... :lol_hitti :willy_nil ;)

The last thing we need to do is look like we can't find something, then, as Monty Python was want to say "I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition....".

I definitely think that not only are you and I brothers from different mothers, but that our wives are related...... I can hear it ringing in my ears now. And over here (maybe the same in Florida :dunno:) there's no reason to pull the garage door back down, so they have this horrible habit of sneaking up behind you just as we are contemplating the next "fix" for the thing we just buggered up, and you get the little voice in the ear (that scares 10 years off the life expectancy) - "Whatcha' doin'???? :lol_hitti

Makes me jump about a metre every time. :shocking:

So I'm just lucky I get home from work about an hour before Irene - to clear away the proof. And some things I get delivered to work, but I've got the receptionist on a pact - I won't tell her husband (who I know) about her shoe deliveries to work, if she doesn't mention my "deliveries". . . . . So I get a hushed call on my extension "Lyndon (in a low voice) - there's a carton here for you". . . . . ;) :eyecrazy: :D

While we are talking about where things gets delivered, we need to work out where to get the knipex ear clamp pliers from and whose office they get delivered to. Lyndon needs a pair for his Air compressor plumbing and I need to work on mine soon so might as well have the correct tool this time...

I'll have a look and see if we can get a good price from Amazon and see if they will ship to AU. ;)

As far as safety glasses go I pretty much have these on me at all times.

I've got some work to do to re-cap if I want to get the attention of the GJ!

Damn you Andy! I couldn't get the radar gun up fast enough to get a speed reading after the pitch. Did you know Acetone melts stuff?
Regardless of your history, that eye looks painfull
Rian, it ached more than it hurt. I've had three surgeries to straighten the other eye -- they cut the muscle free from the eyeball, straightened the eye and sewed the muscle back on -- that hurts. As bad as the pain was, the itching when it started to heal made me grateful for the straight jacket.

GB, I don't want to lead you astray on the Oetiker clamp pliers. The clamp I bought it for was in a horribly cramped place right next to the firewall on the exhaust manifold of my 87 Corvette. It's not your usual light gauge stainless clamp. It's maybe 3/16" thick steel.
87%20Corvette%20Exhaust%20Oetiker%20Clamp_zpska9uxcvu.jpg

The only way to crimp it was with side cutters and my large side cutter just cut thorough the ear. I found the Knipex 14100083 (formerly 1099) pliers and they had both front and side jaws to to the job. You can see both the front and side jaws on this expensive Knipex tool (close to $50). I took the car to a shop and they couldn't get the clamp tightened. This did the trick...
87%20Corvette%20Exhaust%20Knipex%20Pliers_zpsdsakx0k1.jpg

If you have easy access to the clamps (like on your air lines) regular hoof pliers or nippers work just fine. Just don't squeeze too hard.
87%20Corvette%20Exhaust%20Pliers_zpsb8sfg05j.jpg

I'm trying to be better about the safety glasses but I only needed glasses in college so I never learned to take care of them. I found these DeWalt DPG54-2C glasses on Amazon for as little as $4.09 and as much as $37.01 a pair.
DeWalt%20Tinted%20Safety%20Glasses_zps7txpdpzx.jpg

If you want clear glasses, the DeWalt DPG54-1D is the equivalent. I found them for $1.83 on Zoro but you don't get free shipping until you spend $50. I didn't feel I needed 28 pair...

Craig, that's hilarious! The one I had like that one turned white -- once it dries, even bleach can't get all the bloodstains out.

You're a bigger man than me, Bob. I have never gotten comfortable in a straight jacket. As you well know, the nose begins itching insanely the instant they click the lock. :rocker::rocker::rocker:

Now that is seriously funny. You have a very dry sense of humor.
Simon, my sense of humor was completely at home in Australia. The t-shirt vendor outside Port Douglas had those and my wife thought it would be perfect -- I agreed and was happy to buy it and give a pass on the bungy jumping at the festival (rather be eaten by a shark or thrown in a tank with box jellyfish!!).

Andy, Simon, Steve, Dan, Sub and Mike;thank you so much for stopping by and for the kind comments.

I made a horrible mistake and I feel just awful. I opened the Facebook tab on my browser and made one comment. I posted that I didn't care who won. I'm not a sports fan so it didn't matter to me if it was the Chicago Cubs or the Cleveland Indians who won the World Series. I don't understand why all the baseball fans are being so nasty. One team won, didn't it?

It is seriously great to be here in the warm and welcoming bubble of the Garage Journal.

I did have a moment today. After taking my wife to her monthly appointment at the doctor, we came home so I could pick up a $4 coupon and go to the grocery store. As I pulled out of the driveway I saw a motorcyclist on a crotch rocket attempting to set a land speed record on our 30 mph street. He was several hundred yards away but closing fast when I pulled out in front of him going in the same direction. I looked in my rear view mirror and he had down-shifted and was pulling a wheelie!!!! As he crossed the double yellow line to pass me, I floored the Caddy. Going from 10 mph to 45 mph in two seconds, accompanied by the sound of a 556hp supercharged V8 spooling up. Not sure if it was the tires or the engine that got his attention. I was even with him when I let off the gas and he was shaking his helmet so hard I thought it was going to pop off. He had to stop at the light two blocks ahead and I pulled up in the right-turn lane next to him. He was still shaking his head with his hands on his hips and I rolled down the window. Didn't say a word -- just held up three fingers followed by the zero sign.

My wife thought it was terrible -- what if he fell and got hurt!! I mentioned that I didn't swerve into his path, slam on my brakes or in any way endanger him. Surprisingly I didn't win the argument but she did say "you sure scared the **** out of him." I regret breaking the speed limit for a few seconds but MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

A dozen times a day a crotch rocket or tuner screams past our house, trying to make the light. Apparently they have mistaken the traffic signal for an NHRA [drag strip] Christmas tree.

Bob, good onya. I'm so sick of the stupid *** stunts that we encounter each day and are expected to look the other way. It's not a matter of having forgotten some of the **** we pulled when we were younger. Believe me I did a lot of dumb *** things. I'm just getting tired of the lack of any common sense that seems to be such a common place in todays society. What happens when the assdent is doing a buck fifty down the street and some kid comes out of the driveway for whatever reason? We not only have a dead child, we also have someone on their way to a life of regrets and incarceration. No win situation. Sorry your wife didn't share your thought process totally. So I'm saying I probably would have done the same.

YES!! Fantastic post BOB. Use that LS for its purpose. I love when little economy cars or big diesel trucks cut me off and then try to outrun me to get away. That's when I do the same as you and unwind that LS. My mom says I am going to get shot at one day. But is the principle of the thing...

I also approve of your actions/re-actions to the twit on the bike. I'd like to do that more here to bum wipes that desperately deserve to have their poor driving habits pointed out to them. :3gears:

But, if I've got "you know who" in the passengers seat then I'm the one that ends up in trouble, so I have to bite my tongue..... :shocking:

And like Bret's Mum said to him, I also get told "one day they're going to pull a gun on you"....... But I think that's way more likely in your neck of the woods than mine.

Oh, and I saw your FB post, and thought that was very game of you....... :scared:

Hi Dan and thanks for the support. I misled all of you slightly. My response to the childish actions of that young motorcyclist was reasonably restrained (my citation would have been for speeding, not reckless driving) and I'm pretty sure my wife was OK with that. Once I made the turn onto the 45 mph main road, a twitch in my "*******" right foot caused the Caddy to fishtail slightly upon accelerating -- to 45 mph. She rightfully disapproved and another driver might have been justified in giving me a four and a half finger salute. Childish behavior is not confined to whipper-snappers. :dunno:

Andy, I agree that video games have sharpened the youthful delusion of our immortality but I did my fair share of really stupid things when I was young. One smack up side of my head by a train cured me of that delusion. Very effective but not the best way to learn that lesson.

Bret, my somewhat modified PT Cruiser did the job on occasion but this is a whole different league. I have always known that superchargers have none of the lag of a turbocharger but experiencing the difference is something else.

It's funny you mention getting shot. I actually had time to consider it, saw it was a kid and concluded he was very likely unarmed. I make the same assessment when it's a pickup or a tuner and hold back... but minivans are toast.

:scared:

Lyndon
Yeeee har!!! Poets Day is half over.
G'Day Lyndon (maybe it's G'Night). Had I been alone, there's a fair chance I would have accelerated past the kid and made him get back behind me so the throttle governor in the passenger seat might be a blessing.

I lived without the slightest fear of being shot in Australia even though I was there before your government banned most firearms. In Florida you have the right to shoot a stranger (or friend?) if they "make you feel uncomfortable" so it's definitely more likely.

Lyndon, please don't be worried or offended if you don't see me post on Facebook. The aftermath of rage from our election has overwhelmed the happy grandkid and birthday wish posts so I closed my account. If and when the winners and losers calm down, I'll probably re-open it. I'm too old to waste the time I have left un-friending people throwing tantrums.
Bob: I've never been much of a sports enthusiast, but I usually try to use a little more eloquent language and tell people I'm not much of an athletic supporter.
Me neither Andy but I have quite a few strapping jock friends.

Dear Bob,
"A dozen times a day a crotch rocket or tuner screams past our house, trying to make the light. Apparently they have mistaken the traffic signal for an NHRA [drag strip] Christmas tree."
Out here we have solved the problem with a two pronged approach.
Sunday mornings would see a couple of temporary Australians who would like to try a 160K (100mph) run down in front of our place. Well we had a Backhoe with bucket and blade fully extended parked across the road, and a couple of unhappy looking individuals with salt filled snake repellers behind them, when advised that we have the means to bury their cars with no evidence if they ever came around here again.....last we saw of them and their smelly brown shorts.
Then my son heard a couple of characters looking to practice their "Burnout skills in Royalla", he walked up slowly and asked if they knew that there was about 15 police, 2 special services, 5 army, 1 very large debt collector ("known" to them) and 6 bikers living out there? He said "you know that they all like the piece and quiet and get angry if its disturbed", " but that's your decision!!.
No more burnouts for at least 12 months now.

Terrick, just another reason I love Australia. A polite request (and a backhoe) solves the problem as does a simple sharing of community spirit (aka large debt collector and biker friends with benefits). :bitchslap :twak: :badteeth:
