My magnets must be dull... they behave quite indifferent to my titanium wedding band.

Thank you Jim. I'm trying to store the bit collections in one place. They have been scattered among drawers in the garage and in the workshop. Most of the bits in the garage are stored in magnetic 1/4" hex bit racks. The shelf is a piece of 1"x1" angle iron.Nice bit storage.
Philip, Gordon got us as well. I keep thinking I can do some painting but every time I get the spray guns out it starts raining again. Even when it isn't raining, there's thunder and lightning out west.Tropical Storm Gordon got us in Miami-Dade Co. on Sunday, it filled-up the pool. I spent a bit of time in the garage but didn't turn up anything useful like the scrap wood bit holders. I just straightened up a bit. I did use Sears/KMart SYW points/freecash to get a 29 pc. drill index, so that was satisfying. They are described as titanium, not 'Ti-nitride coated' like the HFT ones. COO is PRC.

Rod, you are right! I haven't made that mistake again (yet?). I also have to remember to quit after the second time I draw blood. If I quit after first blood I would get even less done than I do now. On the other hand (what does that even mean?) if I wait for third blood it almost always involves the Emergency Room.Bob that should just remind you not to go to the shop pre-first coffee of the day in hand.
Now I do need a better set of cunter sink bits...
Sorry to hear of your work pains guster.
cheers GB
Andy, your lesson on drill bit sharpening has solved my biggest problem with drill bits. Coating doesn't seem to help once the bit is dulled.Pretty sure those are also titanium nitride coated. I did a little research on the Sears website and it seems they are coated. Titanium is silver while titanium nitride is gold in color. Nice drills for sure.
Stewart, you're right, especially since I was barefoot.Bob, glad you didn’t step in it. [emoji15]

Philip, I think most of my titanium is in my mouth. It's wishful-thinking on my part. Nothing on the box says, "coated," so I took it to be what the package says, "Titanium."
I have a titanium road bicycle, made in the USA in TN, a Litespeed. Yes, it's silver in color. The alloy is 3-2.5 AV. And for 'king of cool' factor, which I'm claiming now that Burt Reynolds is gone, when I wear a french-cuff dress shirt, I can sport my titanium cuff links.
Andy, I actually need pairs of cuff links. On really fancy occasions I wear my artificial arm and hand. It's a wonderfully creepy touch.Burt is rolling in his grave already.
Since you have them, check with a magnet. Titanium laughs as magnets.
Guster, Bob Jr. the first wasn't my first thought. The turds looked closer to Possum or Raccoon size so I was looking around frantically. Years ago I opened a garage cabinet door and the rat inside chose my shoulder for its escape route. I'm not particularly afraid of small animals but the adrenaline shot from something unexpected isn't good for longevity.Gosh...I'm blushing a bit! I really only try to give as much as I receive on the Garage Journal.
All good with Andy. Though now I have both your addresses who knows what mischief I can parcel up to send your way. Andy and I have already discussed initial plans for the great trans-Pacific casting exchange.
Thanks Bob, Steve and Andy for the thoughts and concerns about my work situation. It was just a passing storm cloud in the big scheme of things. Helped along a little faster, thanks to a very spontaneous, kind and friendly gesture.
Looks almost exactly like Bob Jr II has been learning to do woodwork! I do hope he's a better swimmer than Bob Jr I.
The bit storage is coming along very nicely.
PS. Package is still a surprise. Taking quite a toll on Mrs. Guster, who has absolutely not sense for suspense.
Guster, the best use of magnets I recall was to hold those original 5.25" floppy disks up on the metal cabinets at w%rk (I hate that particular 4-letter word) .My magnets must be dull... they behave quite indifferent to my titanium wedding band.![]()
What does "on the other hand" mean to you?
The only use for letter series and number series drill bits I've found are drilling the right hole before tapping threads. You do have a letter drill set, don't you?
Like many phrases, I just use it without thinking. "Busy as a one-armed paper hanger" is another one. What does "on the other hand" mean to you?

.Andrew, now you tell me there's a book. As a writer I tried my best to avoid reading but maybe I'll make an exception. Well, I accidentally clicked on the Amazon link and they want $74 for the book. Took a couple of deep breaths and went back to the search page. FREE PDF download and it's only 2,638 pages long. I'll probably just look at the pictures.Andy, I was thinking something similar myself. I have 2 sets, well make that most of 2 sets of number drills and only use them when the book or table calls for them. But the Huot index also mentions the fractional sizes. Actually so does the book. (Machinery's Handbook)
Bob, I am in the process of moving my shop to a bigger space and I am taking notes on your storage solutions. I have a sh*# load of stuff to store. Would you like some more stuff? I can deliver at no charge.

Bobby, I do remember taking a pair of jets for my '71 Vega GT to work so one of the machinists could enlarge them. Hot Rod Magazine published an article that year showing how larger jets in the carburetor and a ****** header could bump the engine from 110Hp to 122Hp. I went a little overboard with a big Cherry Bomb header muffler dumping out under the driver side window.Number drills are also great for sizing gas jets and carburetor jets. Can be used to clear torch tips too.
Simon, if I move it from right next to the door it might never get taken out. Maybe keeping the lid on it would help.Great idea for the remotes. Perhaps time to relocate the rubbish bin.
Not sure if I should laugh or not.

GNot sure if I should laugh or not.
Not gonna lie, I laughed out loud so loud my loverly wife shushed me because "The kids are sleeping!!!" Then I read HOTFR8's post and thought I should be more sensitive (After all, I read it on the internet where everyone gets **** hurt if you say their ugly dog is ugly). Then I read your reply and felt good again.SimonYou don't have to laugh but almost everything I post is pretty far from serious. I spent less than a year feeling sorry for myself but even that was a waste of my time. I found that a lot of people felt sorry for me so there was no need for me to add to it. I'm not happy to be one-armed but alive and well is a joy for me.

Long story short .... I laughed, went through some family issues, had a moment of doubt, and felt good again
Also, I will be coping some version of that remote holder for my shop radio. The darn thing is always wandering away and I can never find it.
Oh us Aussies have a dry sense of humor...... So on the other hand

Andrew, is your "stuff ready to ship" anything like "meals ready to eat"? I'm thinking of a box of Shorty's Dr. Pepper Jalapeno beef jerky....I never actually got around to checking out the new price. Just as well or I may have had a heart attack. My copy is as old as me. Well maybe a few years older. I think it cost me a dollar at an estate sale.
I have a box of junk, er I mean stuff ready to ship. Oklahoma is a long way so I am shipping to his brother Bob in Florida, down Boca direction.

Ah...... the lid. Well that would be a good thing to do. As for every one feeling sorry for you I think that is a great way to think of it. A great attitude. Sort of why work when some one can do the job for you.![]()

Craig, Amazon has me confused with someone rich. The low price set looked OK but it came in a carry-on size blow mold case and I already have a big one on the door in the workshop. Even Harbor Freight failed me. They want over $100 for their 115-piece set in a metal index box. I ended up spending less than half that for what looks like the same set. I have low expectations but if I can successfully drill and tap a few holes I'll be happy. For $45.99 I thought this looked OK.Well Bob, I suspect we just witnessed classic GJ enablement, you didn't know the MHB and letter drill bits exsisted, or at least what thier use is and now we'll stand by waiting for Amazon to deliver.![]()

I promise I won’t take so long in the future to poke fun of Shorty and Gerard!
Craig, I have done exactly that several times. Not knowing what I was doing some of the tapped holes were tight and some were loose. Now that I have a chart there's a chance I can have repeatable results.
Craig,
Before any overseas readers point out the flaw in all this, my head is already swimming with numbers, letters and fractions. I have a metric tap set but no metric drills. I will need a week's rest before I tackle that.
Bob, I wouldn't let that little fact stop you from using the metric taps.
Just use whatever is the closest and call it a hybrid.![]()
Steve, I will probably start by breaking all the small bits and then move on to the bigger ones. Looks like I can break 115 bits so it will be interesting to see how long that takes.BOB, thats a vast number of drill bits you've purchased, exactly how many holes are you planning.
Just say the word and I'll get the OH to print off the book at work, it's all free on the NHS, maybe 10 pages a week though.
Steve![]()
Andrew, if I banned all the enablers, this would be a dead thread. So Craig saw my post here and immediately offered me a set of letter drills. Naturally I am buying them. I think that enablers like him should be banned from your thread.
PS. Working on the Shorty bait. AKA Dr. Pepper jalapeno jerky.

Duker, I wish I could actually help -- all I can do is tell the big girl up there to watch over you and your family (I believe in God but I'm pretty sure she's not a dude). No apology necessary, I'm honored to have you following along. I assume you are posting from the hospital so I hope your son is recovering from the fluid build-up. Pretty sure the best place to get an infection is a hospital/Bob, first I wanted to drop by and say thank you for stopping by me thread and the comments you made. I very much appreciate all the support. I went to look for your thread in my Tapatalk app and just now realized I have read your thread but never commented before so second, let me apologize for my lack of hospitality and manners! I promise I won’t take so long in the future to poke fun of Shorty and Gerard!
Dukar you’ve been missing out. You’ll learn a lot. Just don’t saying anything about painting, because someone is sensitive on that topic.

Stewart, I found the Dr. P Jalapeno jerky at the end of an aisle at Publix. Next time I'm in Publix without my "You're going to stay alive until I'm done with you" partner, I'll pick up a package to eat in the parking lot.Bob, I’d donate some Dr. P jerky to Andrew’s care package but I hid it so well from Andy, I can’t find it.

BobbyCoke, I wouldn't wish a hurricane on anyone, anywhere or anytime but I do breathe a sigh of relief when they go somewhere else. Because we deal with heat and humidity every day, it's less of a problem and air conditioning is a necessity in South Florida like heat is in Vermont.Bob.... gee a hurricane missed florida -----go figure!!! we are having that heat and humidity that I moved to Vermont to get away from. ........ now drill bits have sizes and numbers????? I ues the eyeball method if it looks larger than the shank but smaller than the head, GOOD TO GO for a bolt........for tapping I just EYEBALL the screws shank less the thread depth and go to it ,when I want to be real accurate I drill in a piece of hardwood scrap [oak usually] the hole and try tap if too tight go up a size ....loose go down a size .....remember 50 miles an hour at midnight it will look Good Good health bobbycoke
Duker, the good stuff in my thread mostly comes from things I've learned on the GJ.Shorty, I agree there is some great stuff in Bob’s thread.
Bob, yes I am in the hospital with my son. I can confirm that the longer you are here the sicker you get! I came in healthy but with almost no sleep for a few days I am starting to not feel well. Going to let some friends takeover for tonight so I can get some rest.
We thank you for talking to the big chief in the sky... I am leaning towards God being a he as only a guy could match my twisted sense of humor and the events that have happened in my life! Thank you again for support!

I see your skills, like your sanding belts, are manifold.
Andy, I am happy to take in your compliment.I see your skills, like your sanding belts, are manifold.
Dwight, the GJ is the enabling capital of the tool world. Someone posted a very expensive 1/2"x18" belt sander so I had to Google them. I am attracted to sub C-note tools.Bob, Your polishing work looks great. I think that this thread is doing great on finding things that I had not realized I needed.
Dwight
Steve, the work you did on the MG engine was my inspiration. The manifold was sitting on the shelf showing me its dull runner and I'm a sucker for shining up rough cast aluminum.Bob there is nothing quite like nice an shiny metal work, well done.![]()
Bobby, even better, its handle can be rotated to look even more like a gun.Bob nice work but that thing looks too much like a gun it could give you ideas. It is not a toy; be careful!
Stewart, I don't have your address so the final destination might be here.Note to self: send Andy scrap aluminum, he cast something nice, sends it to Bob for polishing. Bob sends it Shorty for display.

Mr. Roboto, very kind of you to stop by. I was very frustrated trying to get my compressed air system set up and made way too many mistakes. I try to help others avoid the pitfalls. You have to skim my thread because it falls into a lot of silly holes. Our "little ones" are in their mid-50s and our Pug is 13 so I don't have to spend much time watching them. I started practicing retirement when I was 50 and tried to take care of a few projects and things seem to have snowballed a little. Had I known how much fun retirement was, I would have started earlier.Bob,
Thanks for all the helpful comments and advice in my thread. I embarrassed to admit that I was just now able to come by and check out your thread. At 158 pages long, I wasn't able to read through it all, but I've skimmed most of it. You certainly know how to stay busy, as you're always up to something!
Drives, I wear a face shield whenever I'm sanding or grinding and wear a mask when generating fine dust or painting with a spray can. For the big jobs I wear a fresh air supply/face shield like this one.Bob: great looking start to shining up that cool old aluminum manifold. since I don't seem to follow my own advice are you wearing safety glasses and a mask when you are sanding or working in your shop?
keep up the great work!!
Shorty: I like your thinking, but i'm guessing you'll still have to find and shine your own stuff.
Steve, thanks for the birthday wish. Now that I'm 74, I'd like to quietly sneak up on and pass the US average life expectancy (78.74).Happy Birthday Bob, cool present.
We might or might not have used power files to fit sash/dead locks into doors, when the workshop was super busy.but i managed to kick the habit.
The manifold has come up a treat, great work mate.
Steve![]()
Steve, given my age and mental state it's likely the process ends with ...sends it to Bob for polishing.Note to self: send Andy scrap aluminum, he cast something nice, sends it to Bob for polishing. Bob sends it Shorty for display.

Andy, if you use your sock machine to knit a bunch of compression sleeves in various sizes (wrists, forearms, upper arms, ankles, calves, thighs and skull) it might be more useful for Shorty. That would work. Even better if it's something you could use.
Rian, I go out to the mail box every day and notice it needs sanding, caulking and painting. Then I notice my head is throbbing from the heat, humidity and blazing sun. I go back in the cool of the garage or shop and look for something to saw, rout, sand or buff. For the moment an orphan manifold has won the day.You realise Bob, that it is a very slippery slope from here.
I can see your mail box getting the treatment too. Sooooon.
Nice job.
Ken, thanks for stopping by. I know that feeling. Should I start a little project that could take a few hours if everything goes right -- knowing that something will likely go wrong and turn it into a lost month?Intake manifold looks great. I have been putting off removing my exhaust manifold on the TD5 Defender, as it is warped, and leaking around #1, and #5 cylinders. I am afraid of snapping the studs. Will tackle after my trip away next week, to find my body weight in gold.
Always great to sneak a peek to see what you are up to on that side of the world.
Cheers,
Ken
