Stewart, I hope they like the new smile. My dentist saved me a bunch of money by using cow bone for the grafts and natural teeth from a donor.

Color match that strap and no one will ever know.

Uncle Willie, I like how you think. That strap is my brand new almost expensive one from Amazon. I may have to buy some cheap ones from Harbor Freight. Their camo ratchet straps will be invisible.

At speed, it would have worked like baseball cards in your bike spokes and given it a nice roar!

Roger and Dan, you never forget those long drives to camp sites with cheap roof racks and flat straps holding stuff down. I had to slow down or speed up to get the drone and flutter to a sane level. Even the short drives from the big box stores with stuff strapped to the roof made me a little twitchy. Part of the reason I bought a boat was to move the noise behind us.

Great job on the exhaust welding, Bob! And painted too!

Y'sguy, I was very pleased with the way it came out. When I heard all the little rust chips rattling around inside I thought about a nice stainless replacement. Then I thought about how little I drive the Vette and got to work salvaging what was there.

Tony, I hadn't thought of that but the wire nuts under the dash will probably start a blaze first. Actually, I think I found and replaced all of those already. Maybe the wood is a bad idea....

This exhaust project confirmed my decision to buy a welder. I'm not good at getting things right the first time so it is wonderful to be able to cut and weld my mistakes back together. All those 'almost perfect' pieces of wood I've been saving are a constant reminder of my 'do-overs'.

I did do a little more work on the Corvette. Because I chose not to lock down the cat-back exhaust system, they wandered a bit when I welded them back together. They wandered about four inches and about five degrees. Thinking I could persuade my mess back into it's proper position, I ordered a bigger ratchet strap. Worked perfectly but it really won't look good as a permanent solution on the car. I made a furring strip brace to hold the final position.

To fix the 4-inch misalignment I cut a slot in both pipes on the inside. I figured a couple of tacks would help pull the tips together.

I was especially mad about the angle mismatch but I went ahead and cut the outer pipe off and aligned it properly.

Welded everything back together, ground the majority of the boogers off and sprayed the cat-back with some exhaust paint. My "measuring stick" is a perfect friction fit and the exhaust went back in.

Because there was so much bulky stuff to put back under the car, I did it out on the driveway. Had to do it anyway so I could weld in the A/C. Even with a 10'x10' canopy set up over the car, it was Africa hot out there.

I started college in 1970 with a 1963 Buick Skylark that was replaced in 1971 with my 1966 Chevelle Malibu, both paid for out of my pocket. $600 for the Buick and $600 plus the Buick for the Malibu. To say I'm jealous of your new neighbors cars is a mis-statement. Why are they wasting time and money going to college when it appears they could live very comfortably on their allowances?

I'm in the same boat with the camaro budget, I just want to drop it off at the body shop and let them get to town on it. But then I sit back and realize that I'm not going to drive it that much to justify the cost so I just keep doing it myself at the current pace.

Apologies for my absence from my own thread. From the looks of the weather map Hurricane Epsilon is affecting our weather.

I can't remember the last rain-free day but it was probably when I worked on the Vette in the driveway. It's 75* and 99% right now and the forecast is for more of the same.

Feels like our first summer in Australia (1990). It rained every day from Christmas to Easter.

Ric, I didn't get a car of any kind until after I was married. First one was a $20 '55 Plymouth Belvedere with six of eight cylinders working. Traded it fr a pair of snow tires to go on our $150 '56 Chevy. It seems like an entitlement thing but probably includes a dose of Money/Brains balance.

Cody, I lost some hearing in the accident from a punctured ear drum. Over the years it has healed over and I can hear better in that ear. For a long time I enjoyed peaceful sleep with my good ear in the pillow. We think alike when it comes to our limitations -- selective hearing isn't such a bad thing.

Helps my marriage. From race cars, being a roadie and working in machine and welding shops I am almost as deaf as a stone. With these freaking masks and people mumbling I spend a lot of time alone in my world.
The worst has to be when I coach a little kid in hockey and he talks in a whisper.
So I am going off in my boat to fish for a few hours fog is burned off and I have a nice music system to help me on my way to complete deafness.
I pass the Helen Keller place in Sands Point a few times a day.

Nice work on the vette exhaust. I have a borla cat-back on my slo-vette, and it is really tough to get the tips to align pretty at the exit under the bumper. You have a ground effects kit to also deal with, so I can imagine that you have to deal with another 4 dimensions.

Regarding your wheels: my early career I did some time at an aluminum wheel supplier, and I have to give you a few pointers.

Since you are considering new wheels and tires: you may be interested to understand that anything that is in the aftermarket supply is designed only to consider the suggested SAE corner load with very little consideration of a “safety factor”. Also: aftermarket wheels do not really have to deal with specifications that have to do with “imbalance”. Which is not to say that they *dont* make a wheel with some balance, but they (typically) do not meet the specifications that OEMs require.

All of this said: you may want to find a period correct set of wheels that came with the car; OR - try to find a set of wheels from a C5 or C6 that you can install and put a spacer in there to “fit” the offset. At least if you have C5 or C6 wheels, tires may be a little easier to find every decade or so.

John, it's just an extra layer of misery on top of being confined by COVID-19.

The exhaust system is installed and completely leak-free. It is also tucked in a little tighter than before. I may have to go backwards a little to fix the speedometer. I'll probably have to polish the silverware next. We use it every day so it gets pretty black if I ignore it.

Robey5, all my cars have aftermarket exhaust and cold air intake upgrades. The Cadillac has Corsa mufflers and an Airaid intake and the PT Cruiser has a Borla cat-back fake dual exhaust and Airaid intake.

The ability to chew food pain-free has de-railed any wheel or tire upgrades but I really appreciate the information and advice. On the bright side, stock rims are 8.5" and my rims are 9". There are 9.5" Z51 stock rear wheels out there but even scratched and oxidized ones are $300-400 each.

Hi Eric, thanks for stopping by. Almost anything I do to an '87 Corvette is lipstick on a pig. Completely stock it's a 248 horsepower L98 engine with a torque-based induction system. Putting $1,000 in the car is questionable but decent rims, tires and big brakes is a pipe dream. I chose to waste $42,000 on a 4-door Vette (Cadillac CTS-V) that came with 285/35-19s in the rear and Brembo 6-piston brakes up front.

The Vette is just my old man side-by-side to pick up groceries and prescriptions and entertain myself with tools from time to time.

Mike, thank you for the kind words. We've been lucky so far this year. All the bad weather has been going up the west side of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. I really feel for the folks in Louisiana.

Craig, that's newer than mine and probably faster and more reliable. I admire the security system. Car thieves can show up with a tow truck but that one would require a big forklift and those things are not known for fast getaways.

I wasn't too surprised by the price but the real estate site shows the property tax is $24,000 (almost twice what we paid for our first house). That's only $6,000 more than the property tax on a $1.1 million house around the corner from me (five times the taxes on my shack).

Uncle Willie, I hope you have a strong stomach. The oral surgeon put a paper apron on me that covered me from neck to toe. He extracted three teeth so the blood never made it past my waist. Next session is seven teeth so I plan to skip wearing socks. Blood rinses off skin in the shower but clothing stains are tougher.

Sands Point has been on the top ten highest tax brackets areas a few times. There are quite a few that are poorly furnished and they are hanging on by finger nails. When commuting used to take place you would see a wide range of new cars many Mclarens and the like pass by the house.
I think we paid 26K for this, during the housing insanity houses on this side of street were going for close to 1mil
If you go to google street view do you see my suburban across from Woodcut? The red Van is next door. Both of our cars gone house with panda by front door.

Michael, beyond the harvesting of personal data from smart phones, Google, Realtor, Redfin,Trulia and Zillow expose things we thought were private. I found your house using Google and then learned its value, according to the real estate sites.

Google street view shows your house but includes a very nice USPS vehicle covering quite a bit of the yard. Fortunately you can move the point-of view. Looks like you have two entrances close to the front of the house.

Zillow includes 5 photos of the inside and outside of your next-door neighbor's home that they may or may not have posted. They also show your neighborhood with lots of details.

My current home seems to be free of BurglersAreUs.com advertisements but my last home is exposed. I sold the house in 1999 and discovered interior photos that show everything is still the same but with new furniture and tchotchkes. They even kept the homemade wine glass holder I put over the kitchen sink

We have wanted to move but wife can't decide on another school system.
Now that I have gotten back into boats the town is great for that.
Five years ago you could not see front of house at one point had over 100 types of bamboo, but the town declared it illegal.
I have a view of NYC skyline from back yard and when I had the bamboo I had 10k gallons of koi ponds 300 fish and over 200 water plants. But the town thought I was commercial and broke balls.

I don't think GJ is selling anything. There are bots that scan websites for any information. Google is the most likely culprit.
