Hello
New to the site.
70 plus years in mechanics, 5 in machinery maintenance and 60+ in
automotive and heavy equipment, so the problem I am having should be no real problem, But :dunno:
Last summer I purchased a B/C mod 1600 drill press to use for wood working.
I paid $75.00 for it, which I figured was a damn good price, it has one issue that need attention, The Pulley bearing is very noisy, okay not a big problem, I figured out how to get the pulley and hub out of the casting, and the hub out of the bearing, now the fun begins!! Also located the bearing.
Question: How in the devil do you get the bearing out of the pulley???
I may restore the tool to it's original glory once I have it working and may not.

I’m not sure if you posted a pic as I don’t see one. So I’m going to imagine the bearing fits into a blind flange and you can’t get to the outer race. If that’s the case I’d heat up the pulley with a torch and tap it out using the inner race.

Thank you for the advice, but were it that easy it would be out by now.
Due to the design of the pulley there is no way to get to the inner race.
I may try to photograph the pulley later today but it will be difficult.
The drive splines for the Quill extend inside the bearing even with the bottom of the bearing with a approx. 1/8" clearance .
I am going to try using an old pilot bushing removal trick we used when I was a kid, you pack the bore with wheel bag. grease and the use a clutch alinement tool , by striking the tool the bearing is forced out. But first I have to make a driver.

[/QUOTE]As stated yesterday here is a photo of the Pulley
The hub fits tight in the bearing and loose on the pulley quill drive.

No pics. Can you make a puller by dropping a bolt and washer thru the pulley bearing then thru a socket or sleeve bigger than the OD of the bearing and pull it out with a nut?

I built a Walker Turner SD80 out of two partial machines. Smaller than the 1600 but a similar design from around the same era. It had an unshielded bearing pressed into the front pulley, which was made of zamak/pot metal. The inner race was extended and pressed into the pulley. I had two of the pulleys, one had a chunk broken out of it so that became my "practice piece". My first thought was the suggestion 454 made. That wouldn't work as the inner race bottomed out on a flange inside the pulley. There was honestly no way to apply any type of opposing force to remove the bearing. At least none that I could figure out. I ended up cracking the pulley in various attempts to get that damned thing out. Thanks Walker Turner!! I decided not to break my one remaining pulley. I flushed the bearing out best I could and repacked it with it still secure in the pulley. The machine runs fine but it's a collector piece and not a worker bee. Best of luck to you, remember those pulleys are VERY easy to break. I believe the attached pic (courtesy of VM) is your machine. Am I correct? EDIT: If what I'm describing is the same issue you're having now, and you figure out how to get that demon bearing out, please let me know!
