I had a boiler (and hot water heater) installed in 2009 after my basement had 4" of water shortly after I moved in. I had a very reputable company install the new boiler and replace the 3 zone valves, they also replaced the baseboard heat vents. It's a monoflow system, so no real branches, just restrictive tee's to manage flow through the baseboard heating. The system was designed and installed poorly, but that's another matter.
The reason for the post is, there's no C wire run to the thermostats. I put in smart thermostats so I can change the temp via an app, plus they have weather and stuff, which is nice, they are the Vine brand, cheaper than the Nest, and they work as long as I have wifi. I have a micro USB charger plugged into the back of each of the thermostats to provide the power, but I'd like to replace these for a permanent installation with a C wire.
I have a few questions, the electronics required runs off the micro USB on the back which is 5v, but the C wire connection is supposedly 25VAC, and it's only 1 wire, how is this supposed to work? In the pictures below (sorry, the best I could get) I seem to have 25VAC on the Y yellow screw, the boiler was on and I didn't get a chance to test it with it off to make sure it wasn't switched by the thermostats. The normal C wire is grounded, so that won't work unless I rewire it. I have seen some information about rewiring it to be in series with the coil, but my setup sure looks like it was cobbled. I wasn't happy with the work or tidiness, when they were soldering some pipes they didn't use any backer so they cooked my floor joists completely black. When they left I thought I could have done a better job. Anyway, have a look and give me some advice.
