Bolt 1 wrench zero

working on a Press break at work bolt was a little tight before the HF guys jump in this is a wrench from 1962 thats been used 2-3 times a week since new

shhh I had my foot on it and my back was against the wall it was LOUD when it popped, ****** part is i didnt get the bolt out, Press was built in 1952 and the bolts never been out

It's the cman raised panel guys that will be all over this. "my daddy's raised panel set has been abused since the stone age and still looks brand new"

Just glad to hear that you were not injured in the process.

I know what your going through with that bolt though. Deal with it all the time, bolt has been in somewhere for years and years and now it needs to come out. The worst ones we deal with are the ones that are on the side of the ship and have been exposed to salt water for years.

Kroil is darn good stuff, I swear by it.

i like to put the wrench on the bolt and then beat the wrench with a good sized hammer. haven't broke one yet. then again, they were my grandfather's raised face cman wrenches.

There is little doubt a newer Snappy could have lasted a little longer under such abuse but......the end result may have been the same.

I did something similar a long time ago but on a 1" bolt with a CMan raised panel. The wrench stayed together but the bolt head rounded off.

Pick your poison. I still primarily use Cman RP wrenches.

When I have to push that hard on something, it's time to try a different tool. Usually I know if I start to grunt, I'm going to end up with busted knuckles one way or the other.

What about an impact wrench? They are pretty amazing on stuck bolts. That or a socket and breaker bar, but I would worry about breaking/twisting off the bolt.

You broke the wrench on a bolt that, were the head to snap off, you could drive out with a punch? Now I'm confused. I would not want to punch out any bolt that required a 4ft breaker bar...

if so they are good stuff; never had a problem out of them
man if its that stuck and you can push the bolt through if you break the head, just burn off the head of the bolt. Then drive through the remainder, no sense in fighting it

Williams wrenches of that vintage were as good or better than >> ANY << built by anyone.

The Williams of that vintage would have been a SuperWrench and the texture is different. Chrome color is different too. The wrench pictured looks like a Snap-on to me.

the bolt retains 2 plates together at the base of the press , its a 2 man job because theres no way to access both sides unless your stretch armstrong. I had one wrench on the bolt head and locked against the floor and the other side I was braced against the wall and pushing with my foot. the wrench gave a little and i assumed it was the bolt breaking loose, Nope it was the wrench beginning to crack then POW she gave way

I like my Snapon wrenches for the clearance with the thin sides, but would not be my first choice for something to stand on. Time to break out the HF long pattern or the Craftsman raised panel.

When you finally get this bolt out, are you going to reuse it?

any tool will break if abused... and some wonder why i prefer to use sockes and a breaker bar to bust bolts loose....

I have hit many a wrench with the BFH to break a bolt loose

Soak in Kroil, PBBlaster, etc about 4-5 times a day for 2-3 days..then just impact it off. You'll save your tools and your hands.

I've hadve Craftsman raised panels I've had since the early 70's and I've never broke one, They are strong well made wrenches.

Having said that I know the I can pull harder on a snap-on, than my old Craftsman wrenches, without hurting and sometimes bruising my fingers. And that's not me being "delicate'; most people cannot loosen a bigger bolt I've tightened using the same wrench, (Or at least 15 years ago they couldn't...).

If I were wrenching for a living, I'd go with Snap-On or Mac in a minute.

Well, they don't look new, but they haven't broken yet!

I don't know if there's such a thing as synchronicity or not, but I just ordered a set of SK 6 point combination wrenches for when it would seem a 12 point would break or round out. Then again, I'm not sure they would have worked on a fastener that had stayed put for 59 years!
