I'm about to start a large project in a few months. I hate running to the store to pick up a couple of nuts and bolts. I always seem to come up short at an inopportune time. I'm looking at purchasing a bolt assortment to that I have everything I need.

I like a set on ebay that seems like a good deal. The base price is good, and I like the metal box. However, the shipping is killing me. Anyone know of a good deal on a large collection of standard and metric grade 8 bolts.

Just to clarify, if you are looking for the metric equivalent to SAE grade 8 nuts and bolts, you need to look for metric 10.9. Metric 8.8 is equivalent to SAE grade 5. I think the assortment you pictured is all SAE.

I've heard the best source for metric nuts and bolts are older Volvo's.

I think I have maybe twenty or more times as many kinds of nuts and bolts, and I am trying to convince a dismantler to let me buy twenty or thirty pounds of what they sweep up around the tear down rack. I also just bought a selection about that size of nothing but metric interior screws.

And even with that much at home I make regular visits to Home Depot or an industrial hardware store to pick a few of whatever I don't have or can't find.

Yes, I'm looking for box standard grade 8, and metric 10.9. Ironically despite living in a farming area there is not a TSC within 60 miles of me.

whenever i start thinking about the next part of my project, i try to figure out what hardware, wire, steel, connectors, consumables, ect, the job will take to complete.
i make out a "shopping list", and check my "wish list" board in the garage, and spend a day gathering up everything i need, before i get started.

unless i run out of something, i usually dont have to go shopping again.

i kinda got used to the concept of thinking everything through completely before i order/buy anything.
i guess 28+ years at const eq dealerships has that effect.

1 dealership i worked at "frowned" upon ordering parts every day, or several times a day, for the same piece of equipment. make up 1 list of parts and make sure you have everything needed.
takes the load off the parts dept having to go back and add parts onto a ticket 2 or 3 times a day, saves time ordering and pulling parts, especially if you have 3 or 4 guys working on the same machine, doing different things.

I fundamentally agree with your strategy. That is the standard I demand for projects in my engineering plant. I order parts and conduct an inventory of all parts, references, and tools before the first wrench is turned.
My garage is a little more fluid. My project is going to be and electric hot rod. The scope and design for the car are fluid. I also don't know what will happen what will come up. I have a collection of other vehicles that require near constant maintenance and a never ending stream of small projects. Being prepared for a wide range of requirements seems prudent.

Ask the seller if they would ship USPS flat-rate box (if it would fit)?

I try to keep a variety of mostly metric spare nuts and bolts, both DIN and JIS because you never know when you'll need one. I sometimes buy them in boxes of 25 to 100. Not having a single bolt can add all kinds of time to a repair project. That said, it's not practical to have every single possible bolt size. Not to mention the one bolt you lose or misplace will inevitably be a specialty fastener not commonly available.

same here. there used to be 15 years ago right next to a Farm and Fleet anything both stores carried TCS was way-high on their price but stuff that TSC had that F&F didn't, if you could find it elsewhere in town, you couldn't touch it for anywhere near TSC's price (cheap, if their next door neighbor didn't carry the same item)
I have (2) Big R stores 40 miles away in opposite directions and I usually look for any excuse I can to make the 40 mi run instead of 11 miles to farm and Fleet; they aint what they used to be either...
What I wish we could get would be a Rural King in this area...

On your origial topic of this thread I go to farm sales often and when I do see a bolt bin, they tend to bring as much as youd pay at a Fastenal for a brand new selection...
I did get myself 2 Lawson cabinets like 32 cubbyholes each, one USStandard (coarse) and the other one SAE (fine thread) for $75/both at an auction this past summer; all Grade 8 too.... the fine thread cab is full-er than the coarse but still a heckuva deal for what I got. probably since coarse thread is more commonly used I'd guess...

and without a doubt, there are bins you will run out of quite fast while others seem to collect dust and stay as full as the day you bring it home... just because you have an assortment, dont mean you will "always have it"

I myself use damn little metric here at home.... and driving old Dodges, there is actually alot of fine thread stuff (SAE) on them; especially stuff like suspension bolts...
I play with old mowers and tractors.... never saw a metric bolt yet, on a Briggs Tecumseh or cast iron kohler.
i can get by buying metric **** as I need it a handful (or less) at a time... usually just those occasions I have to work on some one else's car.

I had a '70 yamaha Enduro when I was younger and that thing was as much (or more) US Standard as metric by the time I was done with it.... I don't do stuff like that no more unless I am in a bind... Dad's taps/dies got a workout, and he had no metric back then

Man I wish I had your powers of job-imagination.. when I get into something I might as well leave the damn car running ... NAPA's only 5km away and I'm a chronic customer...

Based on what I'm charged by FedEx for ground shipping and my guess of the weight of the box & bolts, my guess would be their shipping and handling charges are padded. This so they can get the buyer with a "good price" but still come out comfortably ahead.

a few years ago I decided I needed to put together a hardware assortment to keep in my garage so I wouldn't have to keep running to the HW store. It got a little out of control :)

That almost happened to me with a bunch of NOS tools. Luckily I was able to find a sucker to take them off of my hands.;)

I would check with him or another local supply house. Depending on what you want on hand, it can up quick. When I worked at a Deere dealer, they are or at least wanted to be big in supplying customers shop. They have pretty good assortment and cabinets kits. The prices were pretty good from what I saw, but then again there was a good employee discount.

Half my search is done. I ended up at Zoro. 711 pieces of grade 8 hardware and the case for $125 dollars shipped.

I also picked up the 4 bin tower and 4 extra storage bins for $141 dollars.

I think I'll pick up one of the metric sets off of eBay with free shipping to fill up one of the bins. Thanks to GarageJournal I found a coupon code for $40 dollars off. I think it was a pretty good deal, especially with the free shipping.

I know people here have mentioned it before, but zoro's website *****. It is almost impossible to find what you are looking for.
