I am looking for some direction for bolt bin labels. We have a small personal shop and are fixing it up and he wants some bolt bin labels to put on his bins and I am having a terrible time locating some.

I bought printer labels at the office supply store and made my own. After putting them on the bins I used clear tape to help with the grease smudges.

I suggest that you get a Brother P-touch label maker, and print your own custom labels. That's what I did in my garage. I'm sure you will find all sorts of other stuff to label as well.

Sticky back printer paper is available in colored or clear plastic. I use it in a laser printer but i think an ink jet would work just as well. Print a full page and cut as needed.

P-Touch label maker and their label tape are the way to go. The material they use is very resistant to soiling and sticks very well to a clean surface. Wipe the attachment surface with denatured alcohol first and they will stick much better.

Your fastener supplier should be able to provide you with labels.

All info including size, material, grade TPI, barcode, etc and totally pro.

Hello brendalou (long-time listener, first-time caller) welcome to garage journal. Formal introductions aren’t necessary, just get right to it... :lol_hitti

I use bright green "green screen/Chromekey" gaffer tape, and just write whatever I want on the label with a sharpie. (I work in VFX, so I have rolls of this). Sticks to just about anything that's reasonably clean, and I've never had one peel off on it's own.

Gaffer tape stays on nicely, and USUALLY pulls off cleanly, unless it's been subjected to heat for a long time. So if you need to re-label it's handy. I've had gaffer tape on my bins and drawers for almost 10 years on some of them, the bright green is still pretty visible. I'll see if I have a photo somewhere.

You can see some of them in this photo, very easy to read even at a distance. I believe the tape I'm using is about 1" wide. The tape rips very easy, if 1" is to thick, you can very easily rip off 1/4" from the length of the tape and get a 3/4" wide strip. I also use 2" wide tape for labeling larger items that are stored up high, so I can write larger text, or when ever I need to write more than a few words I can write on two lines.

I've got lots of bins labeled with this tape, only two photos I could find showing some of them

Another vote for Brother P touch. They even make a line of labels for rough, hard to stick to surfaces. There are higher end printer models that allow you to print all kinds of symbols and custom designs and even import pictures, albiet low resolution.

sorry for the funny quality on these photos, I resized them on my chromebook.

The tool oil has had the label on there for probably 4 years now. You can see some of the other bins that have labels that are older than others, the green stays pretty bright green over the years.

gaff tape/spike tape is a good idea!
I use a p-touch for most things, also labeled a lot of my keyblank boxes with yellow electrical tape and sharpie.

Another solution is to just number the drawers.

Then create an Index as to what is where.

I found it easier to read one single sheet of paper organized by category and then go straight to the correct drawer.

I didn't have an sort of label maker so I just used Word to create the Reference Chart. Turned out it was pretty easy to just edit the chart whenever I changed what was in any of the drawers.

Seems a bit less cluttered doing it this way as well.

I love those wood drawers!

I started out doing something similar with numbering system, but the way I work I like to remove drawers and take them with me to where ever I'm working, and since I have multiple drawer locations, sometimes I end up re-arranging the drawers from area to area based on what I'm working on. (usually on purpose)

It seems like it could be confusing, but if you're the only one working in the garage/shop, I generally know where things are if I've moved them. It would be HELL if there were multiple people moving drawers around :lol_hitti I don't move them around all that often though.

I do NOT do this for bolts and sized hardware though. Those always stay put, or at the very least get put back where they were. Most of my small nuts/bolts/hardware are in metal stacking drawers that slide out, the lid opens up and the hardware is in organized partitions. Similar to this image below, but with hand written labels unless it was a pre-purchased assortment, of which I only have a few. Most organizers I end up putting together myself based on what I generally need.

Check out Xerox Nevertear labels; it's basically polyester paper and dang near indestructible. Grease and such won't phase it.
