Can anyone tell me what kind of screw/bolt/fastener this is? It's on my condo building's external intercom panel and I just want to change the names. I've been to two hardware stores in Boston which have both told me "I've never seen that before" and my google searches have yielded nothing.

First....if you don't have the tool to open that, you're definitely not authorized by the building to be in there. I have one of those keys...they're essentially a tamper proof bolt head. They come with a fee different commercial intercom systems. You won't find it at a hardware store, maybe a specialty bolt supplier.

Check with your building operator. They should be able to open it and change the labels.

Thanks. Building was changed into condos in the '80s. I moved in (and took over condo ops)3 yrs ago. We are self managed. Sounds like I'm out of luck.

Looks like a Tri Groove? Check it out on McMaster Carr, hand tools, screwdriver bits. Good luck!

I'm too lazy to look, but is there a bit that fits in the HF 100 bit security set? I'm thinking yes.

I was thinking the same thing.... but in case it doesn't

..... nothing a little lighter / butane torch and plastic pen, plus a vise grip won't fix :)

I got around to looking, nope, their are triwings, and split blades, but none of these triple splits. The bit I was thinking was it is actually for wingnuts. I've got screw removal pliers though, so it might mess up the screw, but it would come out.

I wonder if this is where one of those Gator sockets might work? They've been sold under dozens of names but has a few dozen spring loaded pins to theoretically contour to any shape. Sorta like the radius copy gages that look like a comb, but the sockets are - of course - circular.

I've run into a few of those bolt heads- there's a bit style driver which slips off constantly and is a PITA to use.

The socket style ones are much better.
