Bolt outs?

Useful? Work? I know the whole right tool for the right job. But can't help if it's not your vehicle or the po did something. All the ones I see are 5 pieces. Why not more? I assume they are the most common sizes rounded? Or will vise grips do just as well?

When they work you are happy when they just tear the bolt up more they are frustrating. I found that the craftsman ones are pretty soft. I have some bluepoint ones that are much more quality but also were ALOT more money unsure of the OEM of them

Not sure why the craftsman set I assume you are talking about is a 5 piece set there is an add on that is another 5 pieces too.

when they manage to work- Super Awesome (rare for me) When they don't, 20 bucks wasted yet again, cause you can't just buy the big one in a hurry and I tend to snap them

I found they work best if you hammer them onto the bolt and then use an impact. You have to get them to get a good bite before you try to turn them otherwise they just rip the bolt head up.

The craftsman I have are IRWIN made they are also not lifetime warranty not a big deal considering they are cheap but not avail separate at sears stores either

I just purchased some from harbor freight and they actually work fairly well.....so far.
They were $22 for a set of 7 I think.

I have often been tempted to buy a set, its just something I have managed to do without but I do have some expertise with vise grips if there is such a thing. The cost is low enough it makes them quite low risk, if they solve 1 problem or one once in a while, great, worth their money.

for stripped heads? I have never used a easy out, I pound a 12pt socket on there, after that goes on the 8pt. The only "easy out" that I have used successfully, I have used on the inside of a pipe to get it out, small pipe at that, I am also a vise grip aficionado

Think maybe I'll do without them and stick to hammering an old sockets on the fastener one size smaller in the opposite set I'm working with. I.E use a 13mm one a 9/16 and so one. Thanks guys for saving me money. (wait, that happens on GJ? )

Depending on if you can or can't (bolt size) drill a hole all the way through the stuck bolt in the center, use PBlaster liberally helps a TON! with a punch If you have the room to swing a hammer, whack it a few good square kisses (you know when you hit it just right) then whack a 8pt 2 sizes smaller on there, she should come out for ya

I really dont face all that many stripped heads, when there is one can usually cut it off. The only recent broken sockets I have had is guys doing that, pounding chromes on. Personally when i do it an looking to drive a 6 pt impact socket on if thats a tactic ot in most case (gasp,,, walk over and grab a snappy 6 pt which works on occasion) but took 2 off today with channelocks.

There are a lot of gimicks out there but 99% of the time its straight jaw vise grip and Channelock. Its the most with the least.

I have seen just about every way you can do a broken bolt. I think the last one might have been a customer job where someone tried a miracle tool on them. The ones in the first pic were broke flush in a head.

I'm a bit perplexed as to the story of the exhaust manifold bolts Either way it appears that you got the job done

The ones that look like bolts sitting next to that manifold are actually broken studs that came out of a head, had washers and nuts welded on. I did an overhead one on a truck manifold the other day, thought I had a pic. Its a rare day when I have much of a real problem provided I take a few minutes. I got in a hurry the other day and reached around, too hot and got a zort of weld where i really didnt want it, turned a 5 minute job in to ahalf an hour involving 2 men, we fixxed it but it was careless.

Bought the 5 piece set for $9.99 four years ago on black friday and the other five pieces for $4.99 that day on sale.

Used a few times and worked just fine.

Stuck lugnut that a shop ran up on a neighbors car that was at 200 ft/lbs easily and a little heat and it ran it out easily with a cordless impact. Owner had a flat tire and stripped it with factory lug wrench. Not a tool guy he is

Worth the money if found on sale. I found it and it was to me.

I'm pretty happy with the Craftsman. I have the 5-piece set with the 5-piece add-on. The only time they haven't worked was when they actually busted off the rest of the exposed bolt. So, in a sense, they didn't let go. Note that there is no warranty offered on these anymore.

Yep wait till you go try and warranty them they will tell you they are not warranty

Mind you this has happened with random Matco and Mac tools to me as well I have bought them and know they were lifetime warranty at the time of purchase but years later I have an issue try to get them warrantied and am told they are not lifetime either no warranty at all or sometime like one year

Almost all the tool truck bolt outs are made by irwin. I suggest left hand drill bits as well.

The last specialty bits I bought in a bind at Sears, 50$ or so and felt robbed. Some of these new things probably are improved. The one place I make some investment in is small drill bits from a USA vendor at the flea mkt. About a dollar or 1.25 a piece for a 9/64 or 5/32, just right for pilot holes with battery drill,,, along with enough skill to hit the spot. I did one the other day with a drill for giggles, once I got started I could see I had it perfect, punched right thru the center of a 3/8 bolt, got it so good I drilled it 5/16 and it came right out, it dont always happen, normally first resort is to weld it out.
