Hi, it's getting crazy trying keep all the different bolts separated. SAE, European metric, and Asian metric, with the different pitches. Is there a metal guide that would help with all the different threads? I would buy 2 of each. One for sorting, and another the keep my dies in, because the printing is unreadable. Thanks for all the help at the GJ! Artie

I"m not sure if this fits what you want, but I bought this for quick sorting of nuts/bolts as well.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001FZOCCG/?tag=atomicindus08-20

When I bought it, it was free shipping so you may want to look around. It's the standard take on nut/bolt sizing, BUT on the backside it has actual threads cast into the plastic that you can use to match your bolts to. I had never seen this style until I was at a local nut/bolt supply house and they used them there. You can actually see the threads I'm talking about in this link (same item):

If that doesn't fit the bill, you can actually buy the wall mounted style that exists in most hardware stores:

Hope it helps.

I just ordered the bolt and nut thread checker. I'm looking at the wall mounted one. Ebay has a set that goes to 5/8" and 16 mm. They are 77.00 it looks like the ones at hardware stores.

I have thread detectives for metric and SAE. I'm a big fan of them. There are more simple versions of this idea, too.

I have a thread detective I bought from Enco. What I don't like about it is, if I have a tapped hole and am unsure if it is 5/16 or 8mm say, I can't thread that long cable of studs easily. So what I do is I thread spare bolts into all the sockets/nuts, and nuts onto the studs. That way I have loose hardware I can use to check tapped holes or studs. Make sense?

Oh boy, those are nice. I used be able to visually tell between SAE nc / nf and European different pitches.
THEN, I took a liking of Subarus and Suzukis, about the same time I needed reading glasses. That is when I lost my edge.

$54 for the set shipped - best price around for the larger 2 piece set. I almost bought the smaller SAE/METRIC combo but figured spend the extra money - buy once.....

I pulled the trigger on them too. Well worth it over the abridged combo version IMO... that one stops just a little short, these go much larger than I'll probably ever need. Overkill is the best kind of kill!

If I had something missing/lost/broken that I needed to be the same thread, I used to have to take another up to Ace to match, and possibly rummage through the spare bolt bins to find one that matches threads just to take with me. Granted being on a cable sometimes isn't the most convenient if I need to thread it into something on a car, but it beats trying the same with a wall-mounted one. Now I can at least try calling Napa and ordering hardware without guessing at sizes and not have to leave the shop.
