just wondering where everyone is getting there oddball hardware. is there a good place online to order small quantities of odd bolts that doesn't **** you on the bolt or the shipping? local hardware stores don't carry much any more and searching the web im finding places selling boxes or bags of 100 where I need 1 or 2.

Boltdepot.com works for me - no affiliation. Not sure about shipping to Canada though

Going to be hard to find any small quantity for minimal price. The best source around here is Fastenal or ace hardware. Ace is the place to get a small quantity but the markup is crazy

For example I needed some half inch carriage bolts....Ace Hardware I think they were $.25 apiece where is Fastenal I bought 100 pack for nine dollars

Pretty much nowhere. No business will be able to sell one or two odd ball fasteners at volume pricing and be able to stay in business.

It’s not the value of the individual piece, it’s the cost associated in administering it to the buyer.

I am fortunate that years ago I found a small "fastener" store not too far from my house. Only open M-F in the day, so plan ahead. They always seem to have what I need at prices that beat HD and Ace. I also tend to buy a "box" (50 or 100) of small fasteners (1/4" and smaller).

For, small quantities of "special" fasteners (stainless steel), you can't beat eBay.

There are good prices to be had online, but you have to buy in bulk.

I have a number of surplus places that I can buy from. One industrial bolt place that will sell you one screw and then give you a look.
I always buy a box of small stuff to avoid the look.

+1 on amazon, not sure if you are close to Ottawa but could try Ottawa Fastener Supply. They appear to be open, not sure if they ship.

Lee Valley Tool, Allied electronics may have what you are looking for. These guys ship and in small qtys.

Prices on Amazon for fasteners are typically WAY high. McMaster Carr is going to be the best for overall availability. It think it may be hard to get them to ship to Canada IIRC.

Keep in mind the OP was referring to 1 or 2 pieces. NOT box quantities.

Auctions and yard sales are great for buying entire nut chests on the cheap, along with partial boxes of asorted hardware all grouped together.......but the corona.

I order a lot of stuff from Fastenal these days, although I have also used Bolt Depot in the past with great success.

With Fastenal, they do get you on the shipping, but if you have a Fastenal storefront in your area (we have a ton around here), you can have it shipped to their store for free, and you can go pick it up when it comes in (usually 2 days unless it is a really odd ball thing).

I normally go to local hardware or auto parts store for 'need it now' stuff. Usually pad the qty so I have extra.

Otherwise I use Princess Auto for average stuff, and Fastenal for hard-to-find things.
