BOM rivets

Will a regular pneumatic (Astro 1/4) pull 5/16 BOM rivets?

I am just guessing(never used BOM rivets) and would say no. I would damaged my Astro's jaws pulling 1/4 ss rivits and cherry max rivits in 1/4", especially the ss ones. Marson rivet guns would be damaged over time as well.

Do the make special guns for them?

I just looked it up. It is a pop rivet on steroids. It is a blind rivet that the manufacturer claims is strong enough to replace two piece fasteners (a nut and bolt). It looks pretty beefy. I can see why the OP is concerned about whether his rivet tool can handle it.

BTW does Astro Tools sell a kit to convert the 1/4 rivet gun to work with rivet nuts? I know you sell a rivet nut gun.

No, the body is machined very differently. It's not just the business end that's different.
However, I will be giving away some new 1443A's on here soon by request. 8-32 to 1/4" rivet nut size.

I do not think so but Huck has a hand pump hydraulic that does. It was originally made by another company then HUCK bought them out. I had an old one and it was nothing but grief. They sell it for light duty use and service for that one Huck tool is handled by somebody else. But it does do rivets and nutserts and has tons of power when it works. I do not know if BOM mandrels fit. I have abandoned the one tool does all . They are cheap enough not bother.

Oops. I saw one very expensive air hydraulic had tool that was rated to pull 1/4" blind rivets or 3/16" BOM rivets. I suspect the stems are the same size. If you have a tool that can pull 1/4 stainless it will probably do 3/16 BOM. You can check with HUCK. Have you checked the price of those BOM rivets?

After reading the literature on the Huck/Alcoa site where I found a great deal of info., their nose pieces for their tooling are different from one for a normal blind rivet. The nose piece has a conical opening that reforms the head on the BOM rivet. All of their tooling is pneumatic or hydraulic. I have no doubt that a manual tool with big enough handles could pull the rivet but whether you could match up the thread on one of Huck's nose pieces is another matter.I don't know if somebody else makes a manual tool The tinsel and shear specs are listed too. Those rivets are STRONG.

Seen similar fasteners on helicopters... hi-loks, a cross between rivets and threaded fasteners. Very strong, vibration resist fastener. Feature a hex-head that pulls the shank, swaging the body and snaps off at a predetermined torque.

You are going to laugh but I recently installed a toilet seat that had fasteners that worked exactly like a HI-LOK, but they were made of plastic, probably nylon. The Idea was to snuggly attach the seat to the bowl but not over tighten and risk cracking the porcelain. The HI-LOK is still a nut and bolt. The BOM is still a pop rivet though both have some nice inprovements.
