Friends,

I'm planning to build a playhouse for my daughter and want to also sharpen up my knowledge/skills on framing according to common techniques.

Any recommendation on a basic framing book? I can do the google but wanted to get an informed opinion from the forum.

Thanks!

Joe

Any of the books from Fine Homebuilding are good. I think Lowes might carry them.
Library is also an option, if you have the time or even a library.

My recommendation is to just draw up details of the corners, walls, the ridge & rafters, door and window openings.

I don't know how exotic you are going to get but if a play house lasts 7 years its probably outlived its usefulness.

Larry haun was the man. I have seen all the videos he made. Smacks a nail like he has a sledgehammer.

Taunton Press (Fine homebuilding) Visual Guide to Framing is pretty good for a quick overview.

Lot of books out there this one (an earlier version :D) has been my bible since my trade school days

https://www.amazon.com/dp/0826908098/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Even earlier in my career I had this one

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JELIPI/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Although far outdated now basic construction precepts are the same, whether building a playhouse or a real house.

Cant beat the price :D

I also still have the companion book Finish Carpentry too.

No need to spend a lot of money to learn the basics

Your going to need a speed square for the rafters..and everything else so start there and do some reading. Get a Swanson. It comes with an invaluable book on rafter layout. Its a little blue book. Pretty much every framer has one in there belt.
If you can figure that out everything else will be gravy but definitely start there. Heres what you need.

He died of cancer caused by creosote treated lumber. It's a damn shame because he was in tip top health otherwise. Could have lived to be a hundred easy.

I bought a DIY guide to Sheds and Mini-Barns many years ago. It would have everything you would need to know.
