Was just googling the GM Linden NJ assembly plant where my long gone 1990 Chevy Beretta was made and it came up as a plant that made Wildcats for Grumman.
They built the FM-1 and FM-2 Wildcat so that Grumman could concentrate on building the F6F Hellcats. GM also took over building the Grumman TBF Avenger the TBM-1, 2, 3.

I have always been in interested in the history of heavy industrial companies and their facilities especially if local or I have run across their equipment/products in visits to job sites. That said, some books I have picked up related to that interest.

Prior to the widespread use of computers a book on the design of aircrafts structures, picked up at a local sale

Brooks Locomotive of Dunkirk NY which eventually became part of ALCO

Pittsburgh Reduction Company which is now called ALCOA. Plants and Properties of Bethlehem Steel from back in the day

Bethlehem steel on the building of the Golden Gate Bridge and book on Mcclintic- Marshall who built the Ambassador Bridge and was eventually bought out by Bethlehem and thus in reality were the builders of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Audels New Electric Library. These are my father in law's which he bought new back in the late 40's after getting back from the South Pacific. (USS Adair, APA-91) Sadly, he is just shy of 97 and is not doing well. All his shipmates have passed and we are not sure he will make it through the week. I hope to take care of these after he is gone.

Did someone say “deux chevaux” A couple pics of my 59’. Some people refer to the early ones as “ripple bonnets” 425cc’s of raw flat twin power 😂 What it lacks in speed, it makes up for with the smoothest ride you’ll ever experience 👍 Sorry for getting a little off topic.

I was happy to run into a bunch of manuals this morning, all of them wartime or older, including some unusual titles and subjects. Most of the covers have a visible date. The Red Cross edition is 1945. The Farm Shop is from 1944. The Air Nav book is from 1929 (3rd Edition). Healthful (not "Healthy") Living is from 1941.

The British terminology book is neat. It basically lists common and technical terms in two columns, British and American parlance. Paging through it my eyes landed on "tommy bar", just for example (see Pic 1). :) And some of us have seen Pic 2 from the Hand, Measuring and Power Tools TM before, but I'll post it for those who haven't.

Those are all super cool Lugz! That pyrotechnics one is awesome! I’ve never seen one of those manuals with the restricted note on the cover

Here is the wartime Red Cross book that lives in the glove compartment of my Jeep. I especially like the British terminology book.

Cool. I didn't know you had one. I'd say that with its sudden leftward dip and swerve, that's probably a good place for it, but that notorious MB feature was corrected in the GPW. :)

"Open face bandage" is, unfortunately, not my first thought when looking at this figure!

It's been fun leafing through it, and might actually come in handy.

I missed that. Have to be honest, I'm a little disappointed. It seems sparse and kind of boring compared to all the other hand tool manuals I have.

This was on my fathers porch on Easter. I’ve got to make sure my 9yo boy works his way through it. His almost 11yo old sister too. C1193-DE0-0234-49-E7-8-CB9-81238-E093833.jpg

At first glance, I wasn't sure about the rating (***?) on this special issue Pop Mech! Given the subtitle, the way they're looking at each other could be taken a couple different ways I guess. :D I mean, I'm pretty conservative, but hey, what you do in the privacy of your own bedroom is up to you. :ROFLMAO:

The captions just kind of write themselves on this one...

I wrote a response to this then deleted it. I was citing some similar but amazingly successful chat up lines I have used on various nice farm girls.. including Mrs Farmer J,.. but I'm afraid to post them, and the results, on the internet..

:ROFLMAO: It's funny you talk about Mrs Farmer..... when I met Mrs Gearhead, I was working at a Goodyear full service store at the time. She came in to have her car serviced. I joke that she came in for an oil change and she got more than that.....

PXL_20220507_191051833-X2.jpgHere’s a book from my hoarders estate sale, a 1948 machinery’s handbook, 13th edition. It was buried under a bunch of radio parts on the main bench. 1900 pages of information that rarely gets looked at these days.

Looks like someone tore a label off the inside front.

Added to the collection yesterday - Not sure How I'm going to fit them in. We are sort of full up on book shelf space...

Probably job one is "Are any dupes"?

From an Estate sale with BOOKS! Lots O' Books! mostly on hunting and wildlife, and only one of the Deer books is specifically on whitetail! (Books on Muleys are not common, and on Blackball almost non-existent):

These were not, and the Vila book is autographed:

This one is also autographed:

Floyd Clymer was certainly an interesting guy, but probably best known for his publishing empire

mw1.jpg

tsm1.jpg

I knew he wrote books about cars but didn't know he had his own publishing company. I have one of his books on the Model T but it is published by Bonanza.

Hey, I like my old books almost as much as my old tools. Here are some I just rediscovered, that I had forgotten I had.
Most all are from 1954.IMG_20220330_103937967_HDR.jpg

I've got a similar series of books from Delta written in the 1930s, although most of mine were printed in the 1940s.

A couple of weeks ago I attended an estate auction. One of the lots had a group of Motor's and Chilton hardcover repair manuals and Flat Rate manuals. One interesting item in the set was a soft-cover reprint of the factory Jeep Service Manual for CJ2A, through CJ5, that was like new.

There was one book in the group that didn't fit. Can you find it in the photo?

That's right, "The Winchester Book." It is the go-to resource for Winchester lever-action rifles.

Another person won the bid for "anything on the table, and took some old auto parts. The auctioneer then said "does anyone else want any item for the same price", so I raised my hand and took this lot. I got it for retail value of the Winchester book. It wasn't until I got it home that I discovered that it is a First Edition, and signed by the author!

I can use the Jeep manual, since I have my grandfather's CJ2A that he bought new!
