Like most people I have been snooping around the site for quite a while getting all kinds of great ideas and inspiration. I thought I might be able to build last year but that fell through for money reasons so I really started saving up. Then January this year my wife needed a new processor for her cochlear implant. Kiss $9,000 goodbye. But after a few go arounds with the insurance company we were able to get $3,000 back! After that I told my wife I would just do the shell of the barn and concrete for now and go a little smaller. I started getting some material quotes for 30x40x12 and just because I was curious 32x48x12. After I found out that it was only about $1,000 more for the bigger barn my wife said I would be stupid to not build the bigger barn and I totally agreed.:rocker:

So I have my building permit the dirt work is done besides the holes dug and finished smooth grading and materials are ordered. I wasn’t planning on starting this thread until the barn was almost done but I am already having a dilemma. The inspector told me that my footings need to be 24”dia and 12” thick. I am not sure of the best way to go about this. Do I just dump concrete down the hole? I did see that Menards could get 24”x 12’ concrete forms but that would cost me about $500 for all my holes and it would take 2 weeks or more to get. My other concern is that I brought in 18” of sand to raise the barn up so that I don’t have water problems. What do I do to stop it from caving into the hole while I wait for inspection? Any ideas and suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Where about are you in the gr area? There was at one time a concreet supply house out on clay south of 54th. they may have the tubes. There are a couple of pre cast places that may have pads already made, one starts with a k on chicago drive and the other is up on 3 mile just west of walker before the RR tresel. Or you might be able to make some forms using an old 55 gal drum with a section added. Call your building inspector, but we were able to do a pour in the hole(18" dia) and it was good enough for him.

As for the sand, i'll asume that it has already been spread in which case i would taper/rack back the top hole so it stays out of the hole. good luck with the project.

Got home one night from my sons soccer practice and this is what I found!

I was going to get my sand from a friend of my father in-law for $2 a yard plus delivery. Then he said just use my dump truck and get it from another friends sand pit that is only about 2 miles from my house. So we hauled in about 300 yards of sand not knowing what I was going to have to pay the other guy. After speaking to the other guy my total cost for sand was free!
This made my son very happy!

This is where I am at right now. Planning on holes being dug out Monday night with concrete going in on Tuesday.
