My wife got the gardens back in a few weekends ago and we are starting to get some sprouts! So I finished up some rabbit proofing. Last year we lost way to much good edible stuff to bunnies. It got to the point that we almost had veggies and rabbit stew on our menus lol.

Had "help" from my two year old son. And by help I mean he mostly just kept stealing tools. He's still learning 🤣

well a young man's work is never done!! it sounds like he takes after the 'ol man ;) & gets work done before a dinner! hopefully dinner was a good one after hard work in the garage! very cool!! :LOL:

He was very sure, like very sure his tractor was broken and there was no way I was getting away saying otherwise. We got it "fixed" and then had some good ham. Can't ask for more than that 🤣

Last night was unfortunately not fun.......

Lost a goat 😡. I was out walking around from 2:45-5:00am as there was a mountain lion in the area. I was out with the two bigger dogs and a pistol on the hip. Unfortunately we did loose one goat. I found him off by himself in the corner of the property not with the reset of the herd. He had no locatable injuries, no wounds, no blood on him or the ground anywhere, I don't even know if it's possible but I literally think something scared him to death and he had a heart attack or something?? He had only passed a few minutes before we found him based on his body. We wrapped him up in a blanket and held onto him until the kids woke up. It was one of their little newer ones. They got to say their goodbyes and then we had him picked up.

Rest in peace little Timon🍺 Your buddy Pumbaa will miss you!

I am pretty sure the lion was in the yard. I saw eyes not that far off in the distance a few times before the dogs got let out in the field. They definitely stood there ground as I walked right towards them. I have never had a coyote stand it's ground. The only part of a coyote I have ever really seen is it's *** end as it's running away scared. This thing didn't move. On two occasions we locked eyes and it did not move an inch. Whatever it was out there had no issues with me. Idk that seems like cat behavior, not dog??

We dealt with it in Western NE were I grew up as well. I have pictures of paw prints in our garden after it had been tilled, and tracks in fresh snow that followed my dad after he walked around the house early one morning...that was pretty wild.

9/10 you will never see them, you might hear them "scream," but rarely will you actually see one...I would bet you are right, however, and those eyes were attached to a murder cat.

Our coyotes here in KS are getting pretty brave, as long as they are out of the light they will watch for a bit. I've had them right up to our front door on our acreage. We can get a special tag to hunt with artificial light or night optics in the winter months...I'll be purchasing one this year.

Of course my headlamp was on its last leg, so I only saw glowing eyes, I couldn't get good enough light to see a body. I ran in after those two encounters and changed the batteries and had a freaking head flood lamp at that point but then never saw it again that night. Good lesson on keeping batteries fresh. I have seen many many many coyotes. They are very very brazen here, especially this year, I've seen many in braud daylight. We unfortunately became part of the coyote freaking super highway this same time last year. We went from a good 50+ chickens to about 20 in a matter of maybe 3 weeks. They were taking at least 2+ a day. That's when I put up all the barb wire and that really almost stopped them in their tracks. We had a few come over the block wall that I couldn't wire but it really almost completely stopped. I thought about gluing glass up on that wall. We are getting back into the weather where they are gonna start coming out again so I will have to be on guard. I need to see if we are allowed to bow hunt them as they are already nuisance animals, I don't know if tags or anything would even be required at all. I know a firearm discharge would be a big no no as we do have a couple of close enough houses to take that out of the question, but bow? I'll also be letting the dogs roam more as we get into the cooler weather, they will want to be up and about more anyways. They tend to lay low during the summer months. But get "itchy" when the weather is nice which I am fine with.

What sound does a mountain lion make anyway?? I kept hearing what I thought was an owl but it sounded almost like an injured owl, a real funny sound. Never dealt with them much. We did have a bear here once! That was wild.

Also holy moly. We had the little guy picked up to be cremated and returned. $480!

My wife promised my kids that we would bury him here and I had an early work engagement as well as an afternoon Dr appt already on the books, so I physically did not have any morning time to be digging that deep of a hole in the rocky "soil" we have here. So in order not to break that promise to my kids which I really try hard not to do, that was the option so that we can still burry him later.

Not to make light of an animals life in any way but this is possible a good "see honey I told you I need a backhoe" moment...

Sounds like a woman or child screaming, very strange and unsettling in the dark.

Thanks Mr Jim. It's definitely not the first animal that we have lost one way or another but I think this one hit even me the hardest. He was the friendliest one of the bunch. He had a lot of four letter names because he was always somehow tripping me while I worked since he liked to rub on your leg like a cat 😂

In other news just caught this little guy outside. Pretty small compared to most I catch around. Non venomous King snake.

I just move them to the back of my property. He was on his way into the chicken coop area, likely to steal and eat eggs I'm guessing. We have been light on egg collections recently so maybe this guy (and his friends) are part of the reason. I keep most snakes around but move them away from the house and animals when found. They eat mice and Kings will actually eat other venomous snakes so they are a good one to have around.

Your exactly right, the King snake will eat other venomous snakes, and the rats & mice.
I have to keep them on the down low around here, Pat absolutely hates all snakes so as far as she knows they all get dispatched. I haven't found one in the chicken coop yet, yet!
I have a couple here that are close to seven ft. long.

Holy geez! 7ft. No thank you. The biggest snake I have ever "found" around here was about a 5ft Bull. He was in the back porch.

holy ****!! I & MY WIFE!! would freak if saw either of those around the house... I get the chills! .. just thinking about the scorpions being around the house!! although I think that if it would stay in the back yard I would not mind the king :eek: as long as... I knew it was eating the scorps!!

We see very few scorpions around. I have only even been bit once and have moved and messed with the quite a bit. I got bit on the foot once and it just felt like my foot was alseep for several hours. Had that oops I sat for to long limp and that was about it.

I don't mind the snakes as long as they are not rattlesnakes. I luckily have not had any here, that I know of, but my Dad less than a mile down the road has pulled a few out of their well access box and stuff. They hunker down in those cool access boxes and stuff.

We have a pretty big chunk of empty ground behind us which tends to bring the critters in on us a bit more not having that "human" presence back there.

And they just cancelled my order. Well I did. It was either. 3-5 month wait and or a $200 upcharge to call and add one to the store order, 🙄, nope.

It was on sale for quite a bit cheaper than every other place. I think it was a just get you "in the door" and then we make up that discount price somewhere somehow kind of system. I guess it did get me on their website. But no way, not for me.

I found it from another outfit that says they have them on "the shelf", probably drop shipped, but as long as it ships it don't matter to me.

I don't know how old all this stuff is, they were in a big wooden tool trunk that he hadn't been in in years.

I actually plan on taking most of his stuff and making shadow boxes and hanging it all on the shop walls rather than trying to use any of it. It will always be a cool little reminder of where the carpentry started to be passed down from.

Trying to replenish after the last butcher round. We also sold a couple turkeys and gave some roosters away to slim down the ratio.
