Hi, anyone have experience with boot clamp pliers (like for CV joint boots, rack bellow boots, etc.)?

I'd like to buy a good quality boot crimping tool and replacement clamps for next time I need to replace a boot (rather than the plastic cable ties that ship with aftermarket boots...)

Thanks!

The types shown are for one type of clamp. Another type is an Oetiker clamp, sometimes called an ear camp. That style came on my Hyundai SUV. Only the genuine Oetiker brand ones are worth a damn. They come in a huge range of sizes for tiny hoses to bigger than a CV boot. The down side is they are already a closed ring so they will not work with a repair boot without taking the CV joint apart. The grip range of each size is limited so you have to know the diameter with reasonable accuracy. Oetiker used to buy their hand crimpers from Knipex but a few years ago they built a plant in Connecticut and now make their own. There are a lot of other crimpers out there of varying quality. There are end and side crimpers but the Oetiker side crimper will also end crimp if the clamp is not one of their wide ones.

When I replaced my tie rod ends, I got two pairs of pliers. One was from Menards, $10, with brand "breeze", but it's actually Oetiker 1098. It didn't work because of access issue. Then, I got Oetiker hip2000, very nice. Both are made in USA6cff28abe4eff26d6cf33b74324e91bb.jpg82a40202fc2ddf35c5055c88d4672e24.jpg

Here is a video I made showing the Miller Special tool I use

I buy the OEM reboot kit and it comes with the factory clamps along with an OEM quality boot.

those hip 2000 work great with the compound action. Min looks like that but I thought it had a different PN. pinches from the end or the side.

I have not messed with too many CV boots, but I did buy the Knipex ear clamp pliers with the side jaw since I bought a clamp kit for home. I have used the Knipex at work to temporarily re-use the otiker type boot clamps a couple times until further repairs could be done. Worked well.

Ivan on YouTube channel just recently replaced a CV boot. No tools required ! This was an OEM boot and it used a stainless steel band that featured a lock similar in concept to a cable tie wrap. One brand is called Band-It.

I have used these stainless bands before and they work well. You can NOT get them as tight as an Oetiker clamp without a tool, but they do not really need to be that tight on a CV joint boot.

I too have the Oeticker pliers and a set from SuperATV that look very much like the red handle pliers shown here.

That is a great price from Menards

I use stainless large zip ties on all boot replacements I do, I bought packs of 3 sizes and use small mole grips and flat screwdriver get them extra tight and bend end back on itself as secondary lock .
Works great quick and low cost, less bulk and don't rot and good professional looking finish .
