Bored....No Car.....Let's install a lift!

I have been waiting for my car to return from the paint shop and idle time is not good. It makes you come up with crazy ideas. I had been kicking around the idea of a lift ever since I started on my garage expansion but just could not pull the trigger. Well bang! Lift ordered. I wanted it primarily to lift my cobra for maintenance and for storage. I have spent the last few months trying to decide between a two post lift and a four post lift. I scoured the forums and the general consensus was that the four post lifts are easier overall to deal with. Simple to drive on, easier to install, and they have no concrete requirements etc. etc. Two post lifts are better for working on the car and take up less space but they are not as good for storage and let’s not forget about that dreaded concrete drilling. I finally settled on the two post lift. My decision was based on space savings, workability on the car, and I get to pull out my hammer drill. I have 6” of 3000 psi concrete so I do not have to worry about strength. To remedy the storage problem, I am going to weld up a set of cradles to hold the car by the tires. I went with Greg Smith Equipment. They have a great reputation, great lifts and great prices. My model choice was easy. I picked the only one that would fit with my ceilings. I have 9’5” ceilings so the HR 8000 was my only choice. It stands 111”. I ordered it on Monday and it showed up on Wednesday. I had arranged to pick it up at the terminal to make thing easier. Even with lift gate service, if you do not have a forklift at your house, you are not getting this monster off the truck. Call A LOT of friends to help you unload it. The lift is really heavy duty and way more than I will ever need. The quality is very good and all the components were well made and accounted for. Once it was unloaded, I found the only flaw with this lift was the instructions. They could be a little more detailed with some better drawings but we muddled through it. The installation went pretty smooth thanks to all the help from my friends. I can’t wait to use it on the cobra.

Lets use the wifes car to test it!

Haha... Their Georgia store is about 1/2 mile off my commute route. It's always fun to go and look.

Something that I might also suggest: I got their high-rise oil container (the metal one you can pressurize to empty) as well as their under-vehicle tall jacks, and they are GREAT to use with the lift!!!

Something that I might also suggest: I got their high-rise oil container (the metal one you can pressurize to empty) as well as their under-vehicle tall jacks, and they are GREAT to use with the lift!!!

Another thing to consider is a rolling cart so that when you are working under the vehicle you have something to set your tools on & don't have to bend all the way over to the floor to set something down. I bought this one though it is black & not blue as shown in the pic:

He won't be bending down very far to put tools down if he's working under the car - the lift doesn't go high enough to stand under - he'll have to sit on a stool.

So, my question to the OP (sseaner), who i don't know is active on the forums anymore. How do you like the lift x months after?

And, it looks like it's mounted right up against the wall. All 2 post lifts say they need to be mounted at least 6" away from a wall. I'm assuming no problems?

Good catch! I didn't notice this is from July 08....Kinda shows you the quality of posts available as of late. I've been scanning the GJ forums for something interesting and haven't seen much for a few weeks now....

I have had the lift for a while now and I still love it! I am very satisfied with the quality. It has made working on the cobra a piece of cake. To answer some questions; I have it wired for 220v. It is mounted right against the wall but that is not an exterior wall. I have another garage bay on the other side of that wall so the slab extends out another 10 feet. In the pics, the lift is in the middle bay. My garage is 45' x 25'. It divided into two sections. 33' x 25' which has the 20' and the 8' garage doors and a 12' x 25' which has an 8 foot garage door
