Is there a smaller 12 volt impact driver or 1/4" drill driver than the Bosch? Any input on the Bosch 12 volt drills? I read they have short run time. I really only want these for doing short, quick repairs and **** in tight places around my house and on my trucks and equipment. Not for long, all day use building a deck or cabinets. Thanks, Glenn

I got the free PS20 deal Lowes was doing some years ago. I don't use it a ton but the 1.3 amp-hour batteries that came with it have been fine. I can say for certain the batteries charge quicker than I can use them up, at least with the driver. I used it non-stop for an entire afternoon removing several hundred screws from a metal roof I was taking down. I don't recall how many times I changed batteries but the previous battery was charged each time I went to swap one out.

The PS22 is brushless and I assume with a larger battery would last substantially longer than the PS20.

I believe I have heard the Bosch 12V impact is the smallest one out there. There might be smaller hex drivers. Not sure.

BTW, I don't have the 12V drill or impact. Just the PS20, oscillating tool, small reciprocating saw and that magnetic clip light. If the brushless impact is ever released in the US I think I'd use the heck out of it.

Got the Bosch PS20/PS40 back in 2007 and they are still performing great. The same 2006/2007 batteries are even powering my 2014 Bosch heated jacket last winter. Small, ergonomic and high quality feel is how I would describe the Bosch 10.8/12V power tools. Batteries charge fast and never considered them short run time for a small tool. Even though I stepped up last year to the 12V FUELs which blows them away I can't unload the Bosch yet. Added the Bosch PS21, recip and oscillating tool along with a few more batteries in 2011. PS20 is a low powered drill/driver but great for light-duty projects or pilot hole drilling. PS40 Impactor was the best for small projects back in 2007. For heavy-duty projects, decks etc its time for the 18V power tools.

The latest gen Bosch 12 v batteries are 2.5AH, paired with the ps32, the brushless drill, you could go all day. Save a little and get the ps31- non-brushless, and it ought to be more than enough for what you describe, and power wise were a pretty significant improvement over the first version that MRVM spoke of. The newer impacts, ps41, is definitely suitable for tasks such as deck building, mine didn't balk at 1/4" lags in treated pine.

I have several Bosch 12 v and looking to get the heated jacket soon, they're all great compact, comfortable tools with a good power to size ratio. The only ones I would stay away from are the right angle drill, and the OMT. It's a great line, a step down from M12 in both power and size, but not in quality in my opinion.

Love my PS32 brushless drill. Parents got it for me for christmas last year. I **** you not, I charged the batteries when I opened it up and haven't charged them again yet. I use it sparingly doing this and that around the house or pulling off the belly pan on my car when changing the oil. Works great, compact and always ready to go when needed. I just picked up a PS41 impact driver to go with it. Just played around driving some screws into some 4x4's I have laying around waiting to be used on my workbench. Drove them in like a hot knife though butter. Amazing the power this little impact has.

Think I'm going to get the recip saw and new led light to go along with them.

Impressive collection! We need to get you some batteries though. :bounce:

I have a large collection myself. I have been using the PS41 impact for years. It has been flawless! I do all my own automotive work and the PS41 shines when doing that. The new brushless PS32 drill is fantastic as well.

I keep my set in a cloth bag with a large bit assortment, Franklin stud finder, Wera multibit screwdrive, and a pliers assortment. I use this for punchout work and helping friends/family with simple tasks around the house. Stays in the car.

I'm up to 4 in that line of tools and all are winners. The first one I bought was the PS10 right angle driver and it's awesome for installing hardware inside cabinets (esp. drawer openings!) and for working under the dash in cars. The only thing I've found that can drill or drive in less vertical space is a right angle magnetic hex bit adapter that's intended for use with a hexbit handle.

Bosch 12v stuff is good, I have drill, hex chuck drill, angle drill, auto screwdriver and the vacuum at the moment, with a 2ah and a pair of 4ah batteries, will be getting the jigsaw and 3/8" impact wrench when funds allow.

I love my Bosch 12v impact. I've used up hard for 3-4yrs, used the back as a hammer, etc.

Wish Bosch would finally release the brushless version in America.

So, is the Bosch 1/4 impact driver and 1/4 drill smaller than the Milwaukee 12 volts? That's my main thing. I'm sure they are all comparable in power and battery longevity this day in age, I just want the smallest, most compact stuff that is able to fit in the tightest of places. I have 18 volt dewalt drills & sawsall, a 20 volt dewalt impact driver, 18 volt rigid everything, and 18 volt makita drills. Plus a few oddball Ryobi tools. Never crossed the 12 volt bridge. I will say I have used the 12 volt Milwaukee 1/4 impact driver and it felt really big in my hand. The grip was large and the unit as an entire seemed only slightly smaller than the 18 volt impact driver. Though, I did not see them side by side.

FWIW - I just ordered a pneumatic 1/4" impact driver from Mac tools for $80 total. It is normally $272, but there is a closeout special on them, plus many other items. I have ordered quite a bit from their closeout section. The prices listed are the normal amounts. Just send an email or call and they will tell you correct closeout promo price.

Bosch 12 v is noticeably more compact than m12. Think of Milwaukee 12 v as scaled down 18 v tools, and Bosch as a mighty mini. The M12 stuff IS more powerful, but larger.

I have the impact driver, hammer drill, radio, and vac. Also have the lboxxes to hold it all too. I love the stuff and use it more than my 18v brushless Bosch tools.

I have and LOVE the 12v impact driver. Plan on buying into the rest of the system soon. My dad has the impact and the reciprocating saw and he also loves them. He and I have, over the last few years, built my house using the little impact drivers as our primary tool of assembly. They have been used and abused and have both come out on top. More than enough battery life, the batteries will also charge faster than we can use them. I am a fan.

What is the difference in PS21 and PS22? What is the difference/benefits of having brushless? How do the PS21/22 compare to regular drills and the 1/4 impact driver? Could I accomplish the same things the 1/4 impact would do with the PS21/22?

The PS22 is brushless, which gives you a longer battery life. Probably not needed for your application. The PS21/22 differ from regular drills mostly in the chuck. Its a 1/4" hex quick release chuck whereas the PS31 drill is a 3 jaw keyless chuck that will accept the same hex bits and round shank drill bits, at the expense of convenience and length of the tool. There are hex shanked drill bits available if you'll occasionally drill.
The impact then is a different animal entirely. It'll provide quite a bit more torque for driving, at the expense of precise control, no clutch, and the trigger doesn't give the same controllable range of speed that the PS21 will.
I have used the PS21 on tiny fasteners on RC cars and electronics that I wouldn't go near with an impact. With the impact though, you'll be able drive lags, remove lower torque bolts etc.
I use my PS21 all day, when I get to about a 10-12mm bolt I'll switch to the PS41 or a ratchet.
In short, no, there are definitely tasks for which the driver would be a far better choice than the impact, and vise versa.

Do they make some type of 1/4" drill chuck adapter to use on the ps21/22 like a tap wrench almost? That way you don't need the drill bits with the 1/4" drive hex bits.

I have a love hate relationship with Bosch 12v. I have a ps20 that been back to service 3 times & its currently broke. I have the 3/8 drill been serviced once, currently works. I also have 12v multi tool been serviced once ( notice a pattern ).

I really didn't pay much for any of these tools, I think they are super comfortable tools but, they just don't stand up to everyday abuse.

My last battery finally bit the dust, might just kick the habit

Yes, 1/4" chuck adaptors are available. I think Jacob's makes one. I cannot speak to their utility though. There's deals on Amazon right now, just get a combo plus a bare tool for the third, you'll be glad you did.
