Looking for a 1/4 hex driver for general around the house use and for screwing in fasters through predrilled holes in woodworking projects. Is there any reason the PS41 is better for these tasks than the PS21 or vice versa?

One is an impact driver, one is just a screwdriver. So it depends what you want.

For fine wood working projects, I would not want an impact driver.

Screwdriver will do most things. Impact driver if you want to making driving big screws easier, or are installing fixings. For finer work, impact drivers are unnecessary and overkill.

You guys are confirming my thoughts. I’ll likely end up with both at some point, but the driver was what I thought would be better for what I am doing. Wish the offered the. PS21 in a kit with the drill rather than just on a kit with the impact driver.

If you get the driver & impact driver combo, (the impact will come in handy at some point), you'll have batteries & charger, so you can then get a bare drill for minimal extra cost.

I love my impact driver, but if you aren't driving long screws it might not be the best tool for the job. I would say an impact driver is more beneficial to a rough carpenter vs. a finish carpenter.

Only thing I don't like is how loud impact drivers can get, so I wear hearing protection when using one.

I have both and use them a lot along with the right angle impact, drill, flashlight and reciprocating saw. Great compact kit. I have their stacking iBoxx and really like them.

Have the Bosch drill, impact driver, hand saw and a jig saw. Work great! Also picked up a couple of the larger 4 A/hr bats off of ebay, they hold the power. I use the drill for screws just all the time with no problems. Impact is nice for stuck screws and running in drywall and longer wood screws. What really surprised me is how handy that hand saw comes in!

I have both of their predecessors, the PS20 and the PS 40. Bosch had a deal, buy the PS 40 kit and get a bare PS 20 or an angle driver. For your purposes, I think you would want the PS 21 because it has a clutch so you can set it to not over drive screws and you can drill with it. The impactor is best for sinking bigger screws and it will do deck screws in a pinch. You really want an 18/20 volt for the big stuff. If you never intend to drill with it and you are at the high end, sinking up to 1/4 or 5/16 lags or as a light duty hardware driver, go with the PS41. There is about 60 ft lbs there. I tend to not drill a lot with my PS 20 because of the hex chuck. I only have a few hex drill bits and they are not that common in the less used fraction sizes or number sizes or spur bits and I have all of those in round shank. There are adapters but they are not worth the trouble if you already have a driill with a 3 jaw chuck.

Best pair would be the Bosch PS32 (the brushless drill/driver) and the PS42 (brushless Impact driver). Aside from the drawback of being longer in the schnozz and slower to change bits, the drill/driver can do everything the driver can do just as well, plus it's a better drill. In order of getting them individually, hands down the drill/driver is first, then the impact, then the screwdriver.

Full disclosure: I've been in the Bosch 12v platform since it came out here in the US. I currently have the PS32 (brushless), 2 drivers (PS 20 & PS21) and the impact driver (PS41 IIRC, could be a PS40 though). I have the 2 drivers because when they initially came out with a 2 tool kit, it was the screwdriver and drill/driver, which I upgraded to the Brushless version last fall. The second one was a freebie/rebate beast that I got along with the impact driver. It is very convenient to have a drill/driver and a separate driving tool or two available, so I wouldn't worry too much about redundancy if you end up with the screwdriver and impact.
