Can any of you guys in the Boston area answer a quick question for me. I have an elderly Uncle that needs a 16 x 7 roll up garage door replaced and the prices he just told me he was getting were almost double compared to what I see down in this area (Maryland) Nothing fancy, just a plain old wood door that needs to come out and be replaced with a modern metal door.

I bought the best quality insulated Clopay door with windows for my garage for about $900 a year ago. Installed it myself, but most places charge in the $100-$200 for this job locally.

What kind of prices should he be hearing for installation in your area ?

In Moraga, CA we just got a 15x7 insulated steel door -- foam sandwiched between two layers of steel (Amarr brand door). Plus the almost-silent belt-drive Lift-Master opener. We had a really good company do the work -- Alhambra Garage Door Company. Everything, including the haul-away of the old one-piece wooden door, was $1560.

My dad checked prices and the cheapest we could have done it ourselves with the same quality of components was around $1000-1100.

The guy did such a quality job, I think the extra $400-500 was worth it.
