Anyone know of anywhere that sells sets of bottom taps? I know you can buy sets with plug and bottom taps but I just bought a plug set so don't really need those. I prefer something of decent quality nothing cheap but don't want to kill my wallet either.

OR, you can get another regular tap when you need a bottoming tap, and slowly grind the point off (or cut it off with a dremel tool, or heck, even your bandsaw.)

I thought about buying bottoming taps too, but the reality is, I would rarely use them, so if I need one, i'll just nip the tip on one I have, or buy the single I need and convert it.

Bandsaw blades will cut taps? I figured a tap would be like a file and laugh at something like that. Even the spring steel in leaf spring leafs make pretty quick work of dulling a bimetallic blade, in my experience anyway. I've never tried to cut a tap. If you have a local industrial supply, buying an extra taper tap and grinding off the tip like suggested is a pretty good solution I think.

Unless you have access to a good variable speed DO-ALL saw, no, do not cut a tap.

Taps are hardened, thus why when you break one you must break the remaining portions into bits to remove.

Bottom taps are an industrial supply std. but not really sold to the general public in sets. We buy in bulk and per tap. No sets available.

Grind an old taper tap down with a grinder or cut one down with a whiz wheel is the quick fix.

If you need a set, check your local NAPA or tool truck for a set , but I bet buying onesies from the industrial supplier will still be cheaper and better.

Yep, MSC, Grainger, or Fastenal should all sell them. I use them fairly frequently to fix threads on gun mount foundations. I would just buy as needed rather than trying to jury rig a normal tap.
