Bought a drawer cabinet today.

I keep seeing these threads where people buy these drawer cabinets, and I ask myself why? I went to an estate sale today and saw this one, and thought "I can get rid of all those small plastic drawer cabs that are taking up space on my benches and shelves." Wife says go for it, and she'll help me organize my stuff. Guy working the sale was a real ********, though.

I said that I need boxes for the stuff that was in them, or it would end up on the floor. Most of the stuff made it into the boxes. Got it home and cleaned it up a bit, and oiled the rollers inside. Found two small one missing, but it doesn't seem to bother the operation of the drawer (each drawer has like 6 or 8 other rollers).

I had asked the guy if the cabinet was for sale, and he said yes. I said how much? He says what will you give for it? I said $50. He cringed, and said he would have to talk with someone. Came back with $75. I finally agreed after my wife said she would help organize (she's good at it).

I'm going to use the HF wall hanging containers for most of the small stuff, as I already had them and they're not being used anyway. We'll see how it goes.

I'll say it - you ****.

I don't think most people realize how much a cabinet with that many drawers is worth. I could easily build the same cabinet out of wood.
Full extension drawer slides for that many drawers would be very, very expensive.

I would, honestly, feel estatic if I paid $200 for that.

Yeah I spent a lot of time looking for a vertical cabinet with shallow drawers while doing my office cabinet based garage storage last year and never got to one in time (they go very quickly here), you definitely ****.

Yes, very handy and well worth what you paid. If you had to build something like that from scratch, you would pay far more to get wood, slides, and pulls plus the time to build it. Good score.

Good deal. Please post after photos too.

How many small organizing bins are you going to have to find? Several ideas for storage of small parts in the thread on repurposed items on GJ. I can’t find that thread after searching though.

I noticed several of these cabinets come up on CL in the last few weeks. Most are advertised full of various hardware. It made me think, but the stopper for me was the floor space. I am very limited, so I had to pass. Looks like I will buy 5 or 6 larger Harbor Freight organizers. If I need more space I can add more organizers.

Plus, the cabinets weigh a ton. Moving one of these cabinets would not be conducive to my aging back

Good luck with you new purchase.

YEO: you made a great buy and I bet you'll love using that cabinet. i've got 3 sort of like that Boeing had made for them for old computer punch cards. do the bottom of your drawers have an inch wide hole in it that is covered up with a thin board like mine or are the drawers solid?

thanks for posting this cause I was going to give away some smallish yellow plastic bins that might fit perfect in these drawers. i've got plumbing, electrical and nails in my 3. each drawer in mine has 2 bins that can be removed and i had a cabinet like this years ago where the bins didn't have holes in their bottom that i should have kept.

who made yours cause I think I see the badge on it?

you didn't over pay!!

for those of you that want to see other metal cabinets similar and maybe a bit different here is a thread in Vintage tools I started a few years ago. post up yours if you get a chance and here's the link:

I agree, you got a screaming deal there. Ok, now, enough of that. I want to see more pics of that car on the left. I know, this GARAGE journal. But what do we have a garage for? Cool cars.

Great deal on the cabinets. I have a friend with several similar. He's moving to Idaho and we have been negotiating over a few of them. Hopefully I can snag a deal like yours, but I won't be holding my breath.

OK, so to answer some questions...It's a Remington Rand Aristocrat. It has openings on the bottoms of the drawers with thin sheets of masonite on each side. Look at the pictures and see all the plastic drawer cabinets that this will replace. I will get some wall space back, and more shelf space back also.

It's a 58 Chevy Yeoman 2dr wagon, the only year they made them. I also have a 63 1/2 Ford Galaxie. Pictures of both have popped up on the site now and again.

Yeoman: Later if you'd like to store bigger stuff in that cabinet here's another option i'm using for those little cabinets with plastic bins full of small hardware.

i'm stacking these 4 or 5 cabinets tall and they sit on a nice stand.

drivesitfar, look at the third picture of the last set that I posted. I have three of those drawer sets already. We filled one with small nuts/bolts that I may need in the 'tool shed' up by the house, to save me from walking to the shop for stuff. We've already emptied one into the large drawer cab, and may also empty the other one into it, then sell those two empty ones. I have way too many storage drawers, etc., and don't do that much work any longer where I would need so many. Problem with putting them on ebay is that they weigh so much empty.

Yeoman: yep i'm sure one day when I don't have as many To do's and Honey Do's i'll sell off or give away the hardware store, but like I say if i have stuff here already a project is much more fun to take on. especially plumbing or electrical ones if i already have the stuff i need or might need.

sounds like you are doing well with the new cabinet. how do the drawers move in and out now that you have them fairly heavy? reason i'm asking is cause i've seen and owned a few of that style cabinet where the slides weren't all that great.

best of luck on the selling of those organizers and since there are quite a few members that might be close to you maybe post up an ad in the classifieds here with a few good pics. i've used it a couple times and found a few local members and i probably should use it more cause Craigs has a lot of spammers, but i like Craigs better than the shipping and Ebay.

Same - old punch card cabinet is what that looks like.

I used gray containers from Craftsman that worked on their storage wall pieces. My drawers were modified to hold acres of 3x5 cards.

I feel like trendy decorators are driving these cabinets up in price. Saw 2 sets of blueprint/map cabinets (3 stacked on a base) sell for over $1k. I have seen some shops with these and they make killer socket and wrench storage.
