Bought a Harbor Freight 50' hose reel

So, I'm always torn on Harbor Freight stuff. I've never been thrilled with the quality, but sometimes their prices are lower than 20% of other places for stuff that seems to be good enough for a hobbyist or amateur.

I bought a hose reel from them. It normally runs $100, I got it for $50 in part because I had a coupon, and in part because the buddy that was with me apparently used to work for the current manager at that store when that manager worked somewhere else, so he knocked an extra $10 off the coupon price.

At the moment I can't go above 125psi because the compressor is set to kick off then. The previous electric motor was only 3/4 horse, but now that I have a three horse motor on it I'll probably raise it up to around 150psi, kicking in back in around 100psi, but I'll probably use a regulator to keep my line pressure no more than 130psi anyway. Supposedly the hose is rated to 800, but that's probably what the gauge read as the hose ruptured.

I had to buy a leader hose as well, it was around $5. I also had to buy a quick connect fitting for the end of the 3/8" line, and I actually picked up an aluminum Speedaire 3/8" fNPT 1/4" Industrial from Grainger. Yeah, $50 hose reel, $15 quick connect, go figure.

Anyway, it installed with no trouble. The only annoyance was that since there's nowhere for a leader line to free-spin to avoid twisting it up, I first installed the line on the compressor, then on the hard supply pipe, then spun the hose reel to get the line straight and unkinked. I used four 1/2" redheads to anchor to the cinderblock wall, and its lowest point is about six and a half feet off of the ground. High enough to avoid hitting my head on it. I pressurized it and got my 125psi on the line without any problems, and of course the Speedaire quick connect worked fine.

The box showed it mounted opposite of how I did, with the return at the top. I couldn't see how this would matter at all, so I installed it with the return guide low, to make getting the hose easy.

It looks like Home Depot has the EXACT same unit, as far as the actual reel is concerned, for $89. It is painted a different color and comes with both the reel hose and the leader hose, so if the HF unit isn't on sale or lacks a coupon, the HD version might be a better choice. Of course, I'd rather pay $50 or $60 than $89.

I'm even considering getting one for water, as supposedly it's water safe, but I don't know if that's really necessary or not. I certainly am not going to use it for oil.

That reel works well. I have one and have not had an issue with it.

Im a little scared of the fact that you are running the air through PVC pipe, especially because you are running it through Schedule 40... Be careful with it...

Back on topic. The Hose reel does work well. Good luck!

Have the same one hangin from the ceilling in my garage... been there for what, almost 5 years. Need to replace the hose soon, the very end is showing some checking at the compression fitting. but the real itself has been good. I'll put a good quiality goodyear hose on it when its time.

There is a post here somewhere about marking the pivot so you know where to put it when you need maximum flow...

I'm not too worried about max flow. I plan to replace one of my 1/4 industrial air fittings on the rigid stuff with a 3/8" of some sort, and to have another hose curled up on a garden hose holder for the few times I'll need that much power. Until I get the compressor adjusted up it won't matter much anyway.

As for the Schedule 40 PVC, most of it was already there. Some day I might replace it, but the workshop has air conditioning and heat, so it's always been in moderate temperatures. I actually, in some ways, added a bit of a safety in that the PVC fitting from where the compressor's leader hose screws in to where the length of pipe is isn't seated all of the way, so theoretically if it were going to pop somewhere it would pop loose there due to glue failure rather than in the middle of a length of pipe.

Some day it may go away.

I have the 25' version on my service truck. It's been on there, out in the weather for 5 or 6 years, and is just now starting to act up. The spring is hesitant to retact the hose when it's cool out. I'll probably just repace it with another HF unit.

"In Before The Lock"

In reference to the PVC air piping.. which often causes people to argue the merits of using PVC for air... which name calling, and then finally a locked thread. :)

I bought a cheap enclosed reel at a building supply closeout place. I had 50 feet of rubber hose on it. I got the bright idea that I would order 100 feet of nice polyurethane hose from northern tool and since the poly was slimmer than the rubber for the same I.D., I would load more hose onto the reel and call it a day. Well, I must have taken my stupid pills that day because it wasn't until after I had messed with the thing to get it apart and cobble the new hose in there and rewind the take up spring did I realize that the amount of hose on the reel was determined by how many rotations of the reel you could do before you had the spring all the way wound up. It didn't matter if the hose was as thin as spaghetti!. Sometimes I catch on realllll slow.

We have three of the same units at work. Pretty sure they were HF or maybe Northern purchased, but the design is identical. Works alright, with one potential snag. We had left one reel extended for a few days and randomly it decided to retract. Not sure what happened but as it retracted from full extension it started whipping around really good. Luckily nothing was damaged but it was a bit scary...

I bought a 50 footer from murdocks paid out the nose for it. On the way home I stopped by the big tool store they had one in there different brand name half the price. What I found strange was all the stickers on the reel was in the same place same color and said exactly the same thing word for word. even the metal parts was the same color match. I still cant believe such a coincidence . Whats the chance of 2 different companies being able to hit that one. LOL anyhow for what you are going to use it for it will probly last you just as long as a high dollar one that is more than what you need

I have had one of those for almost ten years. Without doubt, one of the best H-F purchases I've made. The original hose only lasted six or seven years (only indeed!). I replaced it with a hose from my local hydraulic supply house and it's still going strong.

(I too tried to put a longer hose on it-yeah, I admit it!)

I've seen other suppliers with the same stampings but painted different colors or with different hoses. I'd bet that one company makes the metal assembly and will paint it to customer (in this case, the store chain) specs, and then it's sent somewhere else for the hose to be added.

I'm actually considering getting a second one. This one is mounted at the opposite end of the workshop from the main door, so it can't make it all of the way out into the driveway. A second unit would be mounted between the main door and the smaller door or else between the main door and the utility sink, so it would be able to reach almost 50' out into the driveway for car tires.

can u post the item number of the hose reel you bought? Thx, P

I'm pretty sure it's 93897.

I have that reel too. Had to replace the crappy pink hose, developed a bubble almost immediately. I picked up the $15 USA-made Goodyear hose from HF, still going strong ~6 years in...
