As the title says, I bit the bullet and ordered a 72" toolbox from HF.com today......I figured if/when I get my NYS taxes back, I can always buy the additional side boxes, but in the mean time, this is a start. Got to fondle it last night in the store, and the quality was certainly surprising.

I had it shipped to my work, so I 'll be sure to take a bunch of pics when it arrives. Anyone know if there's a hutch that fits this thing?

Painted mine green and black.

:shocking: :shocking: :shocking:

THAT is the exact box I want. That's gorgeous, but maybe I'm a little biased as I'm a huge fan of green with black trim.

I can't prep/paint worth a damn though, I don't have the patience or the skill to get it as perfect as my perfectionism requires. Should fly your **** down here so you can paint mine once I get one.

What are your thoughts on the drawer locks? Mom has one of their carts and I'm not a fan of them too much, but I haven't used it much. I think I'd rather prefer to just pull on a drawer wherever I can and have it open, rather than having to go to one specific spot to push the lock button and then be able to open it. However, I'm not a mechanic yet, so maybe drawer locks aren't such a bad thing in a shop? I'd definitely want to keep the key lock, so all the drawers are locked when I leave, just don't know how I feel about individual drawer locks when the key isn't locked.

I'm currently using a KRA top and bottom, with the lockNroll system, and this was one of my concerns....but, mechanics are habitual creatures by nature, so once I/you get used to the locks being in a specific spot, you'll instinctively reach for that spot......just takes a while.

One idea I had was to take the 44" top box to a welding place and have them custom fab up an extension to turn the empty space into a lockable hutch, that way you have a lot of extra tool storage along with a place to keep battery chargers or a laptop or whatever else you'd want.

I have no idea how much that would cost, but my guess is that it'd cost more than I'd want to pay.

I bought a 44" last week and they are really nice boxes. I really wanted the 56 but I just couldn't justify the extra $300 for it. I actually like the layout of the drawers on the 44 better than the 56 anyway. I have a lot of different stuff but not a lot of one type so the extra drawers fits me pretty well. I will probably go back next week and grab the side box for it. I don't need it just yet but I'm sure I will soon. The big one is nice but way more room than I need right now.

Thanks man I can paint but I hate prep work too but I think it looks a lot better then the red. My old craftsman had grip latch drawer locks I liked them better because you can just grab the drawer anywher instead of only one side. The locks on this one arnt too bad the only thing is if you don't hold the button in when closing the drawer the lock tab hits the trim so if you paint it like I did and forget to hold the button in when closing it it will chip the paint on the trim. Here's one more pic.

The side boxes are a steal @ 189......I was set on buying 2, but I'll wait. Nice thing is, the side lockers Will hand on the outside of the side boxes. My "master plan" is to have 2 side boxes, then 2 side lockers outside of those, with a 1/4" sheet of stainless in between for a nice surface on top of it all.....

That green and black looks FANTASTIC. Don't get me wrong, I like the red....been looking at Snap On red for a LOOOOONG time. But your painting is "refreshing" as weird as that may sound. Kudos.

That would be HUGE! It would be 144" with all that right? You would probably need to add extra casters. It would be cool though. You just gave me a idea lol.

It is a big box but man you run out of space fast when you start loading it up at least if you try to be fancy about it. I thought I would have a lot of room left over but I pretty much filled it up so I'll need the side box soon. Trying to space it out nice I filled 2 middle drawers with just wrenches and that was after taking about half my wrenches home lol.

The red is actually the exact reason why I haven't gotten one yet, I'm just not at all a fan of it. What did you use to paint it and how difficult was it? I might just sit down sometime and watch a bunch of youtube videos on how to do it, and then buy one and paint it.

I just used rustoleum spray paint. Satin hunter green and black. The trim just slides off so that's easy. I sanded the exterior of the box a little then washed it up real good. On the outside I did 2 coats of paint and 2 coats satin clear. I taped up the slides and just did one good coat of green on the insides and sides of the drawers since you never see them much anyway. It turned out really good. It wasn't hard just a bit time consuming to make sure it looks good.

Now time to figure out where to get a custom box emblem made, I'm thinking "Snatchco" but don't know how well that'd go over at a shop.

I too, was impressed. That's more abuse than my KRA4813 would have taken on it's first day on the job....I plan on using my 4813 as a rolling cart, and probably selling the top box to pay for 2 new side boxes. :)

Yes very impressive, I purchased the 72 inch box and the 18 inch side box, that is all the space I had to spare. I left the handle off of mine. Only had 1/4 inch to spare.

Looks like the extra time and effort really paid off on the paintjob for your new toolbox. The green and black looks good together and it really changes the whole dynamic of the HF 72". Good job man! Also thank you for your service to our great country!!!!

BTW, you might check out the ernst gripper wrench racks. I just picked up a bunch for organizing my wrenches. Got mine from summitracing.com for between $5 and $7 each and they are pretty awesome.

Congrats, both you.

Sorry for the thread jack, but how many cans of green did it take? Looks rad.

Here is some ultra compact wrench storage.. The front and rear inside lips of the drawer have a HF 18" magnetic strip mounted to it with 3M mounting tape. (That stuff is amazing, I use it all the time). On the right side, The closed end of all the wrenches rest against the magnetic strip, and they all have a magnetic draw to each other.. That's 20 dewalt wrenches in that stack. They don't move, shift, shake, nothing.. I can slam the drawer closed, or slide it back and forth as hard as I can and they do nothing.. But I can lift one from the open end, and pivot on the magnetic to remove it, and the open slot stays open.. It's worked out really well.. That's 40 wrenches and some ratchets with room for more, in a 24" wide drawer, that is 14" deep..

I have two of the 44's. I like the flexibility of two smaller boxes instead of one big one. I call mine 'SnapOff'. I need to get my buddy with a 3D printer to make me a couple emblems.

Wow, that green and black color scheme looks awesome. Great job! I've never seen that shade of green before.

I was very close to buying a HF 44, but the red color was kinda a deal breaker.

It seems like they're selling those boxes pretty well, why can't they start offering some other basic colors?

Because they are already selling well. Why spend more in manufacturing and on inventory to add other colors that might not sell?
