I spotted a 2135 on craigslist for 100 bucks.. I was needing a strong 1/2 impact so this one fit the bill. I knew by the pics it was a little beat up, but I read that these are pretty durable so I had the guy ship it since he was a long ways away. I paid 85 bucks for it, saw similar examples going on Ebay for a little higher, so I thought it was a good price.

Anyway, the situation is a little worse than anticipated. The gun does run though, with some strength.

Here are the issues.

1. The anvil is loose in the housing, probably never been greased. The bushing is available and not expensive.
2. The anvil doesn't hold a socket all that well. I believe that the friction ring is the culprit here. The anvil isn't worn noticeably.
3. The motor seems like it has a slow spot in it. I dunno about this one.
4. It was leaking a little air from the trigger area.

So I figure I'll order the tune up kit and anvil bushing. Anything else that's a common wear item in these guns? Any tips for assembly and disassembly?

In retrospect I would have been better off just getting a new Aircat for the same money, hindsight is always 20/20. Live and learn, I don't think I'll be buying any more used air tools.

I just got back in from tearing it all apart. There was plenty of grease and oil in it, so it got some care...

The barrel has a lot of scratches and grooves in it. Should this be replaced? It's not all that expensive.

Anything else that I should consider replacing?

I just ordered a new cylinder, tune up kit, anvil bushing, friction ring, and a couple other things. 80 bucks worth of parts.

The cylinder was scored pretty good. I don't think it's supposed to be that way, so I went ahead and ordered one.

What is a good substitute for the IR grease?

I bought the IR 115 grease, IIRC. it's a fairly heavy/thick moly grease gray-ish in color.

I got a pound of it at the time, the only thing that came close was some PTO spline lube we use at work for hydraulic pump shafts. And it was still a bit thinner then the 115 grease.
Likely best to get the OEM grease then try to match something.

I rebuilt the motor not long ago in my 2135 and it works much better now. I had bought it used as well, it's actually rebranded for Cornwell. It's pretty easy to rebuild, the inlet kit was a bit of a pain, still not bad though.

What was in it looked just like a Moly chassis grease.

I did a little research and a lot of people seem to use Valvoline Synpower with good results, so I'll get some of that.

Got the parts yesterday and threw it back together. Works great, better than before.

The anvil is still loose in the housing though, even with a new bushing. I guess the anvil journal is worn. I'm just gonna use it as is, since a new anvil is pretty expensive.

Mine is possibly 11 years old and until last year was my everyday use gun the half inch anvil is worn to 12.5mm and looks round on its flat edges. The snap ring groove is worn flush to the anvil , so the ring no-longer is on it. Some say its tired i say its well loved.
Dam fine impact gun. Ill remember one day to photo it and show it off.
