Bought an air compressor, need some help/advice

So, Im new to actually owning a bigger air compressor. I use them all the time at work...but never thought much about it.

Bought this compressor today from my boss, I cant find a whole lot of info on it looking at it, but I havent brought it home yet to clean it all up and look it over. I did find the numbers "c1071080vmsa" on it, which when I google it, comes up as a Campell Hausfeld 80 gallon 7.5hp unit, which seems right and looks about like it. However, mine isnt blue, its like a grey color. Pretty confident it was built in 1994. I wish I could take pics, but I broke my smartphone (for the 7565th time) and its sent in for insurance and Im on a temp flip phone.

Next issue, the air cleaner was left off. Its there, but not installed. Obviously dust and whatnot have gotten in, how concerned of this should I be?

Third, transporting it. Someone told me I can lay it on its side, just not to use it for 24hrs or so, so the oil goes back to the bottom. Thats no issue as we havent finished the wiring in the shop yet anyway. How advisable is it to lay it on its side? Would make it much easier to put it in my truck if I could. I was thinking changing the oil would be a good idea anyway, maybe drain the oil before transporting it? Which takes me to my next question...what kind of oil do I need to buy? And how much do I need to get?

Yes, will be easier in your situation to drain oil BEFORE trying to haul it.

Whatever quantity you take out, that's about what you'd put in later !!
You'll fill to full mark according to site glass or dipstick.

Use compressor oil that's readily available at Sears, Lowes, HD, etc.

I'd just leave it standing up. I've never bothered to lay a compressor down. Changing the oil is probably a good idea since it sounds like the unit wasn't well taken care of.

Drain and lay it where none of the lines get pinched or flattened, it will be safer.If it were to tip over and dent the tank I'd be scared to pressurize.

Just leave the breather high. If it leaks some oil so be it, you can wipe it off and change it later. Or drain before transport. I have had good luck transporting with oil in them Air compressors are kind of like cars engines, no air filter is not really great. How bad depends on the environment. Don't want to be driving around a New Mexico dust storm or in the path of an angle grinder without an air filter. In the 1990's air compressors were notoriously overrated relative to their stated HP which was usually peak. I'd guess this one is somewhere around a 3.7HP actual HP unit, 11-12 SCFM @ 90 PSI.

True, but your horsepower numbers are for a typical labeled 5-6.5HP 60 gallon single-stage compressor. If his is labeled 7.5HP with an 80-gallon tank (so it's probably a two-stage), it's probably close to an actual 5HP.

Sounds like Ill be fine laying it on its side then. Good.

Its a bigass pump and motor, Im not positive on the specs yet (hoping to go get it tomorrow) but they have to be decent.

It was bought by the guy I bought it from a few years ago and hes never used it, it has the air filter and cover, just for whatever reason whoever took it off never put it back on. Id imagine its always been run with it on, but like I said Im sure dust and whatnot has gotten in it.

I was hoping someone would be familiar with these, when I get it Ill have to get some pics and post them up. Thanks guys.

I just got a 7.5 HP IR T30, carried on its side and left overnight till lifting help. Left upright for about 5 days. Ran about 15 min, with small amount of gray smoke out of tank then nothing. Oil is changed and just waiting for me to get my piping put together. Should be fine.

Sounds like the one I have. Its probably an AirBoy model, and was a commercial market unit. Original specs was 26cfm and was a 2stage pump. I bought mine from an autobody shop, had to replace the pump as it was bad. I retrofitted with very large 3 cylinder pump on it from eaton (7.5HP ).

I'm very happy with mine. I have a pressure blaster with large orifice and it keeps up with it fine. Also have a TIP sandblasting cabinet - and installed the largest nozzle. Makes the cabinet work excellent and fast - and the compressor keeps up (even builds to 175psi and shuts off while I'm using the cabinet).

That looks like about the color it is, I dont recall seeing that logo on it tho. Hopefully today I can get it home.
