Fellas -

Have been looking for a vintage vise for a bit, and someone here recommended that I try eBay.it (Italy's eBay site). Here's what I found - http://www.ebay.com/itm/391381217763 - FYI - morsa = vise, and banco = bench, so "morsa de banco" = bench vise.

Here's the translated ad:

Old by English bill bench vise still in excellent conditions of use, made of indestructible steel, integrates in all its parts. Vice for heavy shop marked "MADE IN ENGLAND, RECORD N ° 6", max jaw opening of 21 cm, jaw width 150 mm (interchangeable jaws with screw), weighs 31,500 kg. Scrolling is perfect, as well as the whole mechanism that has been manutenzionato. The shipment will be sent by courier (Bartolini) because it exceeds the maximum weight allowed by the Italian post office. The market cost of this vice and more than 500 euro, a clear sign that it is a tool with excellent features and of unquestionable quality. Contact me for more details, information or photographs.
Tel. 3406613085.

measures:
50 cm long.
Fixing according to the counter 21 cm x 21 cm.
jaw width 15 cm.
Jaw height 2.5 cm.
It weighs 31,500 kg.

I'm not sure if this is at/below/above market price, but I'm happy to find one nearby so I don't have to worry about shipping overseas. Any thoughts?

Scott, Record changed the shade of blue on their tools so many times over the last 75 years that you could get by with just about any shade of medium to dark blue and still be close to one of their original colours. Seeing you're in the military this should be interesting to you: The original Record blue, or roundel blue as it was known at the time, got it's name from the shade of blue used on roundels on the WWII British aircraft of the era.
You can still get it in England (paint), and it's known as British Standard Colour (BS110) available at Stokes paint in Sheffield. (I don't know the address as the last bit of info was from another forum.)

Look on this site. It has a good colour sample and paint code number.

That's not a bad price for a decent one on eBay in the UK, obviously they can be much cheaper if found locally, but its a decent vice.

I agree on that paint---looks like it's hiding some heavy grinding marks on the sides of the jaws. More worrisome to me is the lack of pics showing the condition of the jaw inserts. There's already some evidence of chips behind the jaw inserts, and if the inserts are cracked or badly worn they can be very costly to replace (if you can even find them for that vintage).

This is what a clean No. 6 looks like, and FWIW I paid a tad over $1/lb.

That's exactly what I thought, at first I thought there was a crack on the side of the dynamic jaw, then realized it is a height mismatch on the surface? Heavy paint hides things. Not to mention the chips missing about half way behind the jaw. Even then I think the did good all things considered.

Personally, there's nowt of concern which I can see in that photo. That merely looks like a well used vice, (but which appears to be in decent overall condition), which has been crappily lathered with paint/primer before sale.

Appreciate the input. Anxious to get it home, paint stripped, inspected, cleaned, repainted, and put into service!
