I have a Fowler 12" digital caliper that needs a new case.
All I have found online are leather holsters for your belt. It came with a plastic box (bought it used) that was already broken. I just want something I can keep on my bench so it's not laying around in the open.

Any ideas?

It may be cheaper to go to HF and buy their digital caliper when on sale
Put your caliper in it and then sell off the HF one

Otherwise look on eBay

Wooden Cigar box and foam cut to fit and shadow the tool.

I've got quite a few styles and sizes nice woden cirgar boxes and my buddy has dozens as he smokes nice cigars daily. Nice and plain boxes. No loud logos colors. Just one tone wood with simple gold stamped logos usually.

I'll check to see if long enough.

Then get a sheet of black open cell foam.

Layer bottom with solid layer, then shadow second layer and glue to first layer.

Voila.

Secure and easy access.

I;ve got lift lid cigar boxes as well as nice sliding lid types.

If not, I;ll keep and eye out for old hinged wooden jeweler cases at the flea.

I see them all the time and price is not hateful. Especially for the non-ornate types that look good for tools.

If you are a bit of a woodworker, custom cases along these lines are easily within reach. The joint is a simple **** joint with a floating tenon, cut with a router slotting bit. Material is scrap pieces, from "the box".

Office Depot has polyurethane pencil boxes in various sizes that have securable lids. I use them to store micrometers and machine tools.

On the cheap, new? Plastic top hinged pencil case. Go to your local staples, office depot, other office supply store and browse. This time of year, beginning of school, you should be able to get them very cheap (few bucks at most). I picked up a bunch a few years back for stuff like this. Great cheap storage.

Used--> Wood is kinda hard to find for that length, without being extremely wide.

Used--> Metal socket cases and the like, kinda hard to find cheap and the sides have to be protected to prevent damaging the edges of the caliper. Maybe try browsing your local thrift store, they seem to have a bunch of thin metal boxes, but they are typically more square than long, so not real space efficient.

Out of curiosity maybe call Folwer, I wonder what a case from them would cost? I bet shipping is going to be more than the actual case itself.

EDIT. Damn, Steinmetz, got in while I was typing. :lol_hitti

I actually thought of using a small Plano box and cutting all the dividers out, but the total length of the caliper was larger than the box.

I'd say cigar boxes are out for a 12" caliper

The longest common cigars are about 7-7.1" and even those aren't very common. 5-6" stick boxes can be had all day long. Regardless of length the width is generally 10 cigars wide for 50-54 ring gauge so that's 5-6" also.

4-5 cigars a week here.

ive got an a similar problem. my new fowler came with a broken case, and after you add the brake drum adapter to it, it wouldnt have fit anyway. right now it just sits on foam in my top drawer, but im thinking of getting foam for the whole drawer, and just shadowing the tools in the one drawer. only because that's really all that is in there. 3 mic's, a couple of tape measures, and some feeler gauges.

ended up getting a cornwell pliers set case. it threads nicely into the elastic bits of that case and zips up. not a hard case like i wanted, but nice enough that it doesnt bounce around in the drawer anymore.
