For me, the most edc-able #realedc, still capable, and most importantly the most likable (for various reasons) is the aforementioned Tirant Razor V3. It's been in my pocket 24/7 ever since, apart from pyjamas bed time lol.


The OP's Keen Box Cutter looks like a good choice for warehouse workers or supermarket early morning shelvers who are used to the safety of auto-retracting blades.

I honestly don't understand the fascination with the mini box cutters and "simple" rectangular box cutters/utility knives. They simply are not comfortable to use and have minimal uses. I use my keychain Victorinox a lot, from opening boxes to using the scissors to cut my nails. If I opened boxes a real lot I would use a dedicated and comfortable (fat handle) utility knife or special box cutter.

Reminded me of the WorkPro folding utility knife that are 3 for $18. I just received an order of them after seeing them recommended on this thread. I like how they flip out and back pretty easy.

They were recommended earlier in this thread and I found this video that is what made me want to give them a try.

I like them. I still think I prefer my Gerber EAB Lite, but perhaps because I'm a creature of habit. These are a great deal especially for the price.

Stanley No. 199 is probably my favorite. There is an identical Bonney labeled No. 199, but I have only seen the pictures of it.

Would not mind checking out a Greenlee 0652-22, or one of them Scotch Titaniums.

I agree with the one hand opening. So I took matters into my own hand. Put a simple 6x32 stainless cap screw here and it’s perfect just big enough to do work and small enough to not be annoying.

I purchased the WorkPro unit after seeing your thread. For $6 each they’re about perfect for my needs. I love that the button lock it both closed and open. Upon seeing it when she asked for my knife to slice a box my wife informed me I was buying one for her too. Fortunately I was able to hand over one of the three pack. I will be buying more.

I also purchased some Dewalt Cobalt blades and Rapid Edge serrated blades.

I have several of the utility knives (on the left) in various spots all over the house, boxes and garage. I have a couple of the duck hook knives too.

Cutting and lighting are subtly critical items for my productivity.

I've got one of these with a drop-point blade. Tough for the money and you can put a razor sharp edge on it. It was a freebee, but I really like it.

Is there one that's ambidextrous or at least reversible?

If not I'll stick with the Stanley push-out type but it's a pain to change blades and requires a screwdriver.

A Gerber EAB Lite is always in my pocket, folds up to be just larger than the utility blade in it, the screw for changing the blade is designed to use a penny or a dime (or if all you have is a screwdriver), has a moneyclip style clip that keeps it right at the top of my front pocket at all times, and costs under $15.

This is also what I carry, has served me well enough.

Here is what I got; a Dewalt 10035

My brother pulled it outta the mud at a construction site, it had been there awhile, being run over many time in the mud for long while before she got kicked up and visible. I de-gunked her, cleaned it up, tossed/replaced the messed up blades, and she was good to go. So, she survives a real world endurance challenge, in a non-test environment. She is ambidextrous folding to user, as well as retractable, 3x extra blade storage in handle compartment. The quick release is set up for right handed release/left handed blade swap, as well. This meets your requirements. and I believe this model is available still for sale without being extraordinarily expensive. Also, there is the revamped model, I will also link for, the DW0035L. I got big paws so the size is perfect for me. If your paws are not big, try the recamped “35L” model below.

Only for a lefty and I agree they should make a reverse version. The right side is the slide. One item that is a pain with this is the blade as I am unsure where to get them besides the manufacturer.

It's not super duty, but it's all metal (except for the sliding button) and is really small - only slightly larger than the blade itself when retracted, and the slide stop is variable position. I keep a couple of these around the office to open packages (it comes in a set of 2).

It's quite hefty, being metal - not sure if it stainless, but I THINK it is based on what the silver one looks like. The original blade sucked, so I replaced it with a Milwaukee blade. Never had an opportunity to need the bit driver in the upper corner yet. I should also clarify that it's just the slider BUTTON that's plastic, the spring mechanism itself is metal.

These are hard to beat. I like the original liner-lock version as opposed to the newer push-button. Just my personal preference, they are both great.

The Chub looks kinda cool, but the price is overwhelming to me for something that I will probably loose. My EDC has been the Gerber EAB for many years. I never liked that the blade could open while it's in your pocket. Because of this post I ordered the WorkPro unit mentioned above. It just arrived. Nice looking piece. About 1/4" longer that the EAB. Smooth one handed opening and closing. The EAB opens with one hand after it gets broken in but the WorkPro opens easily right out of the box. Time will tell how reliable it is. But $18 + tax for 3 it made sense for me.

I think you'll like it. If you got the push-button one, it's slightly longer than the original liner-lock version. So if you want something shorter or you prefer liner-lock like me then look around for the older style. They are still pretty easy to find.

I that's a good point and really, i think the button lock is a better design for sure but i still prefer the liner-lock for some reason

I've never seen the black version before. I'm not sure how i feel about that. I guess it depends on what type of finish it is. Some look better than others with a little wear.

I might get a few and just give them away if i don't like it. It's not like they are $200.

Worked in a warehouse one summer in high-school. We repackaged car brochures for dealerships, lots of cardboard and steel banding. The number of people cutting themselves, pretty badly, with box cutters was astounding. Fortunately had someone on staff with medical training and he stayed busy patching people back together. Shoot I've still got a 1" long scar on my middle finger from that summer...

I can fully understand places that limit their liability by providing safety cutters. My work is silly, can't carry a pocket knife, because weapon and dangerous can only use company provided utility knife, because somehow not weapon and dangerous

My safety person and I were installing some accessories on his new company truck recently. I pulled out my workforce box cutter and he stopped me, instead pulling out a Slice brand mini ceramic bladed safety box cutter. It worked fine on cardboard, but I had a laugh when it wouldn’t cut the rubber weatherstripping. I’m all for not cutting myself, but the form factor of the Slice reminds me of an Olfa touch knife I used 30 years ago.

I have a similar shaped thing, with a little ceramic cutting blade, cuts one layer of paper, like coupons, without taking off a finger. But that about ends it’s usefulness.

I have a similar one, given to me by a hoarder's son back in 2009 after I bought a large pile of tools. No patent inside the casting, so newer than Lugz'. I keep it hanging near the garage door, for days when nothing more useful (included in pic) is available. I only use it for cutting tape on boxes to break them down. Don't bother trying to cut real corrugated with it, way too frustrating.

Right now preferring the Gerber for carrying, the Workpro for working. The Workpro jams me in the leg when I sit with it clipped to my pocket.

Geez, I feel like a real hillbilly. A couple of years ago I picked up the two knife Milwaukee set at Home Dumpo right after Black Friday. I have one in the house and one in the console of my pickup. The biggest reason I bought it is the 5 extra blades that you can carry in the handle. Nothing worse than getting a blade dull when youre in the middle of using it. The bright red handle was another reason. Ive lost two folding utility knives over the years cutting open bags of grass and leaves at the compost site.

I've have carried a Gerber AEB or AEB Lite in my pocket every time I've left the house for the better part of a decade now, and I also bought a 3-pack of the WorkPro utility knives for not much more than I've paid for a Gerber, and I like them. I like how they can be pretty easily flip out to the locked open position and then back to the locked closed with just a one-hand flip, and for the price, can't be beat, BUT I still much prefer my Gerber.

Yes, the Gerber is a two hand deal to open and to close, BUT it is much more stout by a long shot. I've already had to toss one of the WorPros because I somehow broke the locking button while it was in my pocket to where it was flopping open to closed waaaay too easy. I still have two more of those WorkPros, so it's ok, BUT it happened that I broke it on one of the very few days I've tried carrying a Workpro instead. My Gerbers have lasted years and I've never managed to break one, not even when I've broken the blade in a Gerber many times trying to pry with it or whatever else a utility blade is not supposed to be used for. My experiences so far make evident that I'm much more apt to lose or misplace a Gerber EAB than I am to ever wear it out, and the opposite is true of the WorkPro.

To me they each serve their purpose. One of the other WorkPros I now keep on the small table next to the front door for opening boxes, and the last of the three is still clipped on the same cardboard strip the other two came packaged on, waiting for whatever I decide to do with it, and a Gerber EAB Lite has been in my pocket every minute of every day that I've been out of the house.
