Has anyone found a use for purely box end or purely open end sets? I primarily have just combination sets, but do have a few box end only wrenches. Use them to back up when breaking with a combo. Can't see a use for open only.

Open end only, I'd go for a set of angle wrenches. These have a 15 degree angle at one end, and a sixty degree angle at the other... if they don't fit, almost nothing will.

I have several sets of double-box wrenches: Deep offsets, half-moon, etc. For those, it keeps the cost down because you need fewer wrenches, since each wrench has two sizes. 10-19mm is 5 wrenches, instead of 10... 10x11, 12x13, 14x16, 15x18, 17x19. ;)

No open-end only here. Only combination and double box for the same reason as TNT stated ... more sizes ... less wrenches.

I like double-box in deep offset and extra-long varieties. I have several odd open ends, but don't use them much.

I use offset box end wrenches and the snap on zero degree offest box wrenches which are very handy on some jobs. As far a open end only the only ones I see a need for are angle wrenches. On hydraulic lines they are worth their weight in gold, atleast that is what Snap On thinks. I bought harbor freight for them since they aren't used that often to justify the price for them.

I have (I believe a couple) set(s) of box end wrenchs. Very handy to have fewer wrenchs and don't use the open end much at all anyway. My open end sets were gramps (no metric) but I would like to get the angled ones someday. An old timer friend prefered a set of open end and a set of box end, instead of combo wrenchs. He said "that way you have two wrenchs of the same size, when you need to break of and spin a bolt loose).

I have several different types of double box wrenches, and I use them all the time. I also have open ends but rarely if ever use them.

I have tons of double box ends, short, long, deep offset, midgets etc. About 95% of my box ends are old, and older. I bought most at hock shops, flea markets and the like, all are the best old name brands in USA stuff. I use comination wrenches the most, followed by my old box end stuff, I have a good many open end wrenches, but I do not reach for them more than a couple a times a year.

double open ends seem to always be shorties. ive never used them, but a lot of people do obviously. i just havent found out on what since they dont produce much torque. :) doubles are great. i use a 75-degree double when removing shocks,etc...they also make long doubles(18-22") for working on trannys bolts.

i prefer to have double box end wrenches because it will work hard and will not spread it than open end box that will make spread as little but more chance to slip if more pressure on it.

i've actually been looking for a set of reasonably-priced double-box metric wrenches for my motorcycle toolkit... any recommendations?

I'm thinking of getting the SAE and metric double box GearWrench sets (9240 SAE & 9260 metric). I only have one GearWrench (18mm) and I wish I had more. The SAE goes from 5/16" to 3/4" and the metric from 8mm to 19mm. I figure that later I can get the SAE 13/16" to 1" (9309) and metric 21mm to 25mm (9413) combo 4 piece sets to go bigger.

I use a lot of box and open ends. I work on old Jags and many of the older models used Whitworth fasteners. For some reason, the majority of Whitworth wrenches made in the 50s, 60's, and early 70's were open-end and box-end styles. I have vintage Craftsman, Snappy, Stahlwille and other European sets. I like the box ends because they come in different offsets and loosen rusted bolts more readily.

I wonder if those might actually be made by Toptul for Wiha... just a thought. Personally, I plan to either get some Protos or the Cman pros, although, if I had the budget, the Snap Ons look REAL nice.

They are actually made by Heyco in Germany, and are stamped accordingly.
