Box extensions for round old work box

Working on a retrofit situation where round boxes (which will be VERY hard to remove) need to be extended 1.5"+.

Arlington box extenders only go to 1.25".

Adding a metal octagon extension (is this code?) Only gets me to 1.5".

What is the proper way to do this? Best way, and I know this isn't proper, is to cut the bottom off another old work box and use that as an extension. It's tapered to slide into the existing box and will mount nicely flush to my surface.

What depth? I have 1 5 deep (not enough) and I've heard of 2 1/8, but local supply house couldn't find any.

I think k stumbled into my solution this morning, 1.5" steel extension (as you pointed out I'll have to ground it) followed by the Arlingron spacer to take up any additional. Looks pretty clean, and adjusts to the varying depths caused by my strapping, panelling and the shims.

You can stack the extensions, if you have to.

Rember that your wires need to be long enough to reach 3" past the front of the box, with all the extensions.
