Box mounted 1/2", but installing 5/8" drywall

Lighting and Electrical question:

Right before drywalling, the electrical box and ceiling boxes are mounted 1/2" away from the stud (the box has indents to make this easy)

Drywall guy came and said he wants to use 5/8" drywall on the ceiling due to the spacing of the joists. That makes sense..

But this would leave me with 1/8" gap between box edges (now recessed) and finished surface. I believe code allows up to 1/4" from finished surface?

So is the 1/8" difference an issue or not? I rather have the box recessed a little than have it stick out too far affecting how flush the light fits. Remounting the screw by 1/8" is probably not going to work well.

An 1/8" isn't too big of a deal. Use caterpillars to stack behind the device yokes to hold them out at the face of the drywall. Don't count on the ears of the devices to hold themselves off the box on the drywall.

If you want, they're cheap enough, we use these quite a bit when we end up with boxes set too far back in the wall:

You just slip them in behind the device before you screw it to the box.

Ran into same problem. Quick visit to local hardware store and/or HD solved it with these. Cheap and easy to use.

Mine is round box for ceiling use. However, it depends on the light fixture, some may have a cross bar which itself is like 1/8" thick. It seems like most of them just draw the fixture to the drywall.

By "caterpillar" do you mean the green foldable spacers?
