Looking to outfit a new garage. I have MANY different sets of wrenches over the years and always seem to be missing what i need or triples of some.

I want to buy 1 complete set, of SAE/Metric Box / Open end wrenches.

They dont need to be high end. I am a weekend warrior. Working on my Jeeps, kids quads, boats etc etc. Not a real mechanic, but i want to have the "right tool for the job" when i need it.

What brand or sets do you recomend?

Thanks

Chris

Tekton is a nice budget option. I really like my SAE William's supercombo full polished wrenches at work. I also have the William's Twain metric satin metric wrenches at work which are decent and no skip from 6-24mm.

How big do you want to go? There reaches a point when it's just not worth the no skips. After 1 1/8 and 24mm is it really worth having all sizes? I bought a Tekton 25-32mm wrench set, I only use the 27, 30, and 32 and once used the 28 on an air compressor thermostat. How many uses are there really for a 29 or 31mm wrench? Tekton likes to include sizes like this in their no skip sets when all they really do is empty your wallet and fill up your tool box.

This is the time of year to be tool shopping!

The Craftsman V-Series wrench sets on sale at Lowes right now are insanely good value, pro-grade tools. That's obviously the one to get.

The non-ratcheting sets are skip-free (e.g. CMMT87325V). The unique case is genuinely awesome to use. The wrenches perform well (check out Torque Test Channel's reviews of Facom - of which these are essentially clones).

It's not like there aren't 50 other recommendable brands that fit your requirements, but why not get pro-level wrenches if they only cost as much as lower mid-tier do normally?

E.g. nothing wrong with Tekton, Gearwrench, Carlyle, etc. But I'd be swayed by the best deal.

Mostly skip free and the case it comes in is very nice.

The Tekton is really no skip and 6-19mm in is $63

I hate to be that guy but the Icons with the better open end (RBRT anti slip) are complete sets @ $129 each, $119 with a regular combo end.

Ok true. It skips 9mm.

Craftsman V-Series PRO Tool Deals at Lowe’s are Impossibly Good!

Ace Hardware also has Craftsman V-Series Tools on Sale

At least get the ratchet wrench sets to supplement your regular ones.
And the case really is nice. I mean really. I like it better than the similar overdrive sets that I own; and fewer skips than the overdrive.

More specifically, it is labeled really well. So you know exactly where the wrench is. It's very easy to read, it opens easily. It carries easily. They go in and out easily.

But if you really want no skip, get Tekton. I didn't mind the skips because I have other no skip sets.

I bought the ratchet wrench sets but lots of slips there. They have a double flexible ratchet set .that I did not check out because I have the long double end no skip Tekton set.

I like no skips also. Proto is the best for good coverage at a reasonable price, not quite as bad as truck prices. My SAE goes from 1/4" to 1-1/4" by 1/16ths, with some /32nd sizes also. Then, up to 2-1/2" by 1/8ths, with some /16ths also. Metric goes from 6 to 34 without skips.

That's a perfect size assortment for most DIY stuff. Adding a 1 1/8, 27, 30, and maybe 1 1/4 and 32mm will get you 99% of automotive and boat stuff.

Chris, I hate HF but I really think, looking at the price and the YouTube tests, the Icon wrenches are what you seek. Get the anti-slip ends and don’t look back. Wrenches are rabbit holes. If you want US made, I’d go Williams.

Oh and stop worrying about skips. Modern wrench sets generally have all the sizes you will need. Recommend 10-19 +8mm. 3/8-3/4+15/16”. 5/16=8mm you don’t need both unless the sets are split up.
