Box Recommendation For Beginner Tech.

Hello all,

First post here. Came across this site a couple weeks ago and have found a slew of information that has been extremely helpful.

Anywho, my question is, does anyone have any suggestions for a beginner box?

I am getting a Snap On Krsc326fpc for free through a Veteran program that allowed me to enter the industry. My plan is to use that box as my everyday box/ service cart to roll around wherever needed.

I would like to get another box for my bigger tools/items that I will not use on a daily basis. Such as big hammers, chargers, air hammer, slide hammer and a variety of other tools.

I have been scouring Craigslist in hopes of finding a used brand box for around 650. However, I've been out of luck for anything in that price range besides other service carts.

Which leads me to my next question. I have really been considering one of the new Milwaukee boxes. Either the double chest or the 60" workbench. All of my power tools are Milwaukee, so the screw holes for the chargers is a plus. Do you think this box would serve me well for quite a few years in addition to my cart?

Thanks for any and all insight!

If I was to start all over. I would start with a cart just like what you have and if I needed more room I would get the harbor freight 44 box. By the time you fill up both of them you should be at a point you can get into something bigger like a 72 from strictly toolboxes and keep the 44 for home use

I would hold out as long as possible and find a nice truck brand box on Craigslist. Even if its just a 26" box to get started.

Welcome to the site. It is a good idea to put your location under your login name, it helps if you ask a question because many times the answer may depend, to a degree at least, on the area of the country in which you live.

I see these older style stand up boxes from 500- 800 quite often. Most of them have lived a long time in shop environments, but are still good for many more years of service.

Sure they wouldn't be new, but when you can afford the one you want- They won't be worth much less than what you paid for it, unlike the harbor freight.

This one is only $600:https://springfield.craigslist.org/tls/5956958390.html

I only gave $500 for the yellow matco cart, full of tools:

Here's a mac $700:

Look around and you can find something.

In the $650 range, either a HF 56" or a used name brand box from Craig's List.. Pay close attention to the drawer depth of these boxes.. The deeper drawers are the better choice for a box that will be sitting mostly in one spot. Bigger, heavier, stronger boxes have the deeper drawers; which have far more capacity.

For blow molded cases, seldom used tools, or large odd sized stuff, I would lean towards a wallocker with casters. Durham mfg, gladiator, and others offer them. I would try to pick up a used one. You could also get by with a locking metal five drawer file cabinet too. Welcome to the journal and thanks for your service:beer:

The only complaint I have on that box, is if i leave the lid down, I set stuff on top of it. So I just don't put much for tools in the top, mostly use the drawers.

:thumbup: I have one of those. I bought it for 600.00 NEW back in 82

It's probably still not a bad box is it? Still stores tools? I know a mechanic who has used one daily for probably that long.

Saddest thing is thinking what $600 bought then compared to now, and how little wages have changed.

If you are going to be opening and closing drawers on a daily basis, skip the consumer grade stuff. My husky box lasted just three weeks in a professional setting. Save and buy something with depth and strong slides. I scoured the pawnshops in my area and picked up a classic 78 for a good deal.

Always good check out used brand boxes on craigslist etc as always retain value and easy sell on if want upgrade.
Milwaulkee box ok but pricey for what is, indeed HF boxes more for money and the deal prices superb buy but they also not most robust . I think the masterforce boxes are better quality but it up to your requirements and budget.
Would say a big bottom cabinet way to go as work surface super useful plus long and good depth drawers useful for bulkier tools and you get more storage for you buck in the 56" plus cabinets ...

If you look real close at my yellow box, I don't have the factory drawer pulls on it. It had a broken one when I bought it, I went to lowe's and bought stainless kitchen drawer handles with the right bolt spacing, they look great. I did do all of the handles so they matched.

Seems most carts are around 5-600 used in my area

Thanks guys for the helpful input! I will continue to look for a decent used box online/ pawn shops in hopes of finding one.

Looks like the Milwaukee one has been ruled out. There is a dealer for Extreme within driving distance from me, who often has Scratch & Dent sales. Maybe I will get lucky and score a new box at used price! Who knows, I still have some time before I must get one.

Keep looking on Craigslist, or any social media classifieds. You will find a quality used box if you keep looking carefully. I was trying to find an inexpensive roll cab for a couple months. I didn't want to go with a HF because I hate the drawer latches. Ended up with an older Matco double bank roll cab for $400 from Facebook marketplace. Little elbow grease and its a great replacement for my Kobalt stainless top/bottom at work. Kobalt is back home and will be for sale soon.

You will see a fair number of Unicorn Craigslist finds on here. I commend the people who find them. However, if you are busy working and training you may not have time to scour all day and then drive 100 miles each way to pick it up.

So I vote for the HF 44 and the side cabinet for a little over $500. The deeper bottom drawers and the cabinet will hold your big blow mold cases with special tools or you can remove them to save space. Later when you find a box to make your shop buddies jealous then you can take it home and have a good box for the garage.

What HF drawer latches are you talking about? I have two sitting beside me right now that have detented drawer slides and no latches. I believe they have been like that for several years.

The HF 44 boxes are a good value, if you are close to a Menards store, their boxes are a good value, as well.

Whatever you do, don't get so far in debt with tools and a box, that 1/2 of your pay goes to the tool truck.

Enjoy your new career and welcome to GJ

Just a word of caution..some SO deals can be found on CL..But don't take the sellers word for it...Call Snap on with the serial # and make sure theres no money owed on the box. Snap-On retains lien rights to their boxes bought on SO credit..Lots of Techs quit, or get canned..and their first source of fast cash is that box they still owe money on...

The 56" and 72" that HF has on display. Same as the latches on my 5 drawer cart. They ****, IMO. Some people like them though.

I have the 44 inch HF box which is really 42 inches wide. Works fine for me in a home garage permanently moored under a shelf system. Not applicable to a working pro shop environment.

I saw this one at Costco today. Looks good for storing larger tools too. Check it out. Looks like an excellent value.

Priced at $599

I would go for the new tougher Husky 52 inch, 18 Drawers, Power outlets/USB outlets, Magnetic back on the hatch. Smooth Drawers with self close.

Or the 60" husky mobile workstation. I have two of the milwaukee alternative and I think the Husky would be pretty darn good for automotive beginners...

^ Too many shallow drawers for intended big stuff storage, he better going for a 56" or bigger roller cabinet only and lining top with ply.
If can't find anything used then masterforce 56" if on sale would be close to budget, HF on super coupon deal could be worth it if budget real tight/bored searching used and would last ok in right hands (see a few used professionally and seem do okay when used sensibly)

A lot of these recommendations won't work well for you.

An 18" deep box is great for a guy in his garage, but won't last long doing mechanics for a living.

Not that the hf 44 doesn't seem to be a pretty good box, I have the matching drawer bank hanging on my cart and its pretty sturdy and has given me no problems.

But an 18" deep box will fill up almost instantly. Especially if you buy stuff in sets and keep the tools in their molded cases, some of which you almost have to.

A 50-56" x 22" is the smallest box I would consider if I were you, and really a 24 or 25" deep box would be much better.

Having had many different tool boxes I can say the extra depth gives you more practical storage than the numbers would indicate.

I'm sure others who have several different depth boxes or have gone to deeper boxes will agree.

Mainly because if you have to turn something longways to make it fit in a drawer it pretty much takes up the whole drawer, maybe leaving a little on the end. If you can put it in a drawer the other way it only takes up a 1/4 of the drawer or so, maybe a 1/3 - depends on the set in question.

So instead of getting 3 or 4 sets in a drawer, you only get one and a bit of odd space, and sometimes a long skinny space at the back.

A 30" deep box is even better storage wise, but can be an issue making room for, and are more difficult to move, both in the shop and from job to job.

Given you are fairly new to the field you probably move jobs a lot, especially at first.

I've moved my kr660b by myself with just my pickup several times. Put the tools in 5 gallon buckets, pull the drawers, lay a piece of cardboard on the tail gate, tip the box on its side with the fixed wheels up, back the truck up close to it and tip it ahead until it hits the cardboard and then pick it up and in. Its a bit heavy at the last point, but doable, especially if you can get a hand right when you pick up the end - then its easy.

You can then then put the drawers back in, strap it down, and put the buckets in around it. (a 5 gallon bucket holds a lot of tools.) If you moving a short distance, and/or under pleasant circumstances you can do the drawers in a second trip and its quite a bit easier.

With a 30" deep box this isn't really practical. They are a lot heavier generally speaking for one thing, also I doubt if you could put the drawers back in, or at least the lower ones once its in the back of a truck, so realistically you would need a trailer to move it.

And if you have to find a place to put the box in between jobs, a 54x30" box is a monster, hard to get through doorways, etc....

On the other hand you can often pick them up proportionally cheaper for that very reason.

I recently bought a krl1001 in decent shape for $1000, he delivered it to my work for $75 and I bought carpet runner for drawer liner at lowes for about $80. Then another $20 or so in cleaner/lube and a weekend of casual cleaning/lubing/cutting liner and I have a really nice box for under $1200, and its old enough I'm fairly certain its paid for. (1997)

The comparable new box from snap on lists for $9050 - plus tax, and its pretty much the same box except the new one has 2 full length top drawers instead of 1, but it also has fewer deep drawers which is also less handy these days.

You definitely want more deep drawers also - once again, cases. Tap and die sets, puller sets, meter cases, Scanner, etc... all come in cases, or are themselves too big to put in a shallow drawer. You want some shallow drawers of course, but not mostly shallow, and definitely not all.

The 72 x 30" boxes, or even the 72x24" boxes are generally sold for even less proportionally, because they are even more of a hassle - but they are more of a hassle.

I see a Krl7023 on my nearby craigslist for $1500 and looks to be in ok shape for example:

https://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/tls/6015109758.html

I see the classic 78's for $1500ish fairly often, but I have some doubts about whether or not they are paid for.

Still higher than you want to spend I understand, but even better ones do pop up now and again.

I was in the middle of moving (house, not job) about 3 months ago and couldn't go get it, but there was a kr1000 for $350, but it only lasted about 4 days before it was sold.

Nice guy, offered to hold it for me, but I didn't want to do that in case things didn't work out, said it was in good shape and I believe him, pics looked good and he was an older guy with a farm who just didn't need it anymore.

But for that price if the drawers worked okish and it wasn't battered to death it was still a good deal.

So deals are out there, but be ready to jump when you see one, but give whatever you see a good look over.

From the name, I'm guessing you're going into the Diesel field? If so, any clue which area you're focusing on? Trucks, AG, Heavy Equipment, Power Gen? Shop or Field? A lot of the larger stuff like wrenches, big sockets and brand specific tools are shop provided.

Plenty of old timers who have done just fine with a 26"-40" stacker, adding a side cab or two. Also known a few guys that got moved into a service truck and have their jumbo box sitting empty in the corner of the shop.

The cart you're starting out with is already WAY ahead of a lot of guys, and a locking prybar holder can fit a ton of stuff that would otherwise be stuffed diagonally in drawers (long prybars, slide hammer, long breaker bars, long socket extensions, etc).

I agree with bdelmar2 above. Not sure folks even read your post. The HF boxes simply won't suit the heavy items you need to store. They are very lightly built boxes with low rated drawer slides. Perfect for homeowners, hobbiests, guys with normal duty tools and low expectations.

What you need is either a KRL or a Vidmar/Lista box. Look on Craigslist for both. Off the top of my head, storage of heavy tools sounds like a Lista would be the right answer for you.

Couple things to ask the group about are whether it makes sense to buy a "starter box" or not. I did. Many of us did. I ended up giving away those boxes. So that was money down the drain. Either a KRL or a Lista box will be more money, but will hold up and hold their value making either a better financial decision if you have the scratch now.

FWIW, I recently bought a 20 year old KRL761 in great condition recently for $700. It was advertised for $1000 on CL. Call guys and talk to them. Tell them you are a vet looking to start out and I'll bet you will get amazing deals and support. I know I would if I were selling you a box.

I would take your time and wait until you really need the stationary box. You can do all the stuff they'll have you working on for a while out of a cart. If a deal comes along be ready to ****** it up-cash & trailer ready. I missed out on a krl top and bottom for $1000 because it was listed on Friday of Memorial Day weekend and I couldn't get all the cash at once with the banks being closed. If you don't find a great deal I would go for something like the hf 56". I like the 44 and taking it home when you upgrade but like other people said you really need more than 18" deep. The new husky 60" looks nice also. The only thing I noticed is the middle drawers are like 27". I would look for 30.
