Box top idea.

I was thinking of getting a piece of granite cut and using it for the top of my box. I just dont know if this is a good idea or not. Has anyone tried anything like this before?

If you ever try to hammer on it or set a heavy block or anything else that is heavy the granite will crack. Wood would be a better choice imo

Very good point. I also thought while rolling the potential of hitting a rough spot may the granite. This seems like a bad idea all of a sudden.

Stuff I was looking at was about 1 1/4" thick, I would guess that would be counter top.

I don't think it's a bad idea. If your toolbox supports it rigidly and you don't put too much weight on it I think it would work as a makeshift surface plate. If you don't have a use for a surface plate and getting granite is just for looks I would probably skip it. Stainless steel is probably the best looking top that also functions well as a toolbox top.

I agree it would be pretty good and smooth. but if you roll your box around a lot or do hammering on the top it would be bad

I dont do a lot of hammering or move it around to much. I really dont have a lot of room to work on it due to my set up. I was thinking a white granite with some black lines or something of that nature. Here is a pic of my setup as it is most of the time:

I would go with a corian counter material, you can get close to the same look but not have to worry about it cracking or being way heavy.

granite is not a great idea, i have a few leftover pieces from kitchen remodels that i have done. ive got 3 pieces about 2x4 and they work great for said surface plate or cutting gasket materials and such, but as soon as you drop a large pipe wrench on it or your BIL hammers on it they crack up easily. id definitly go with a wood top.....maybe build yourself a sweet white colored hardwood floor top for it.

Granite would be unique for sure!! Probably not a great idea for heavy use as stated above.

The photo suggests whang-bang hard use is not likely to be the problem. You want some complementary back and white bling, then granite is unique. Getting a piece cut to size is going to be a bit costly. Definitely consider black with the quartz sparkles. A white worksurface is not a good idea, even it it doesn't get a lot of old grease on it.

I appreciate everyone's responses. I can get a piece of granite custom cut for $162 bucks locally, I have already done the leg work for price. Im just not sure at this point what to do. I am not sure how a butcher block top will look with the black and white.

I wanted to do 1/4 black starboard on mine almost indestructible and nice looking but pricey
