So I usually get the 5 quart oil jugs (instead of single quart bottles) at Walmart for all of my vehicles and I noticed that some companies are starting a 12 quart box of oil.

Anyone tried one?

I know that whenever a plastic jug is used for oil I believe it cannot be recycled so it Has to be thrown away in the landfill, So this is kind of cool because all that you actually have to throw away is the plastic bag in the box is recyclable

I’m always looking for ways to waste less in life however you cant beat the convince of a 5 quart plastic jug

I do like the larger size of the 12 quart containers Since my vehicles require so much oil, 2500hd 6 quarts, camaroLS3 is 8 quarts etc

Since when? I've been putting moil plastic oil cans in the recycling since recycling started. Just let them drain completely. Some areas may want the can washed out, but it still can be recycled.

Hey Tommy Just because you throw them into the recycling bin doesnt mean that they are recycled, it not like the recycling police is going to stop at your house but the recycling facility sorts them out and throws them away since it cost too much money to properly clean them for recycling

My garbage collection company (flood brothers) says not to throw them into the recycling

And

the largest waste company around waste management instructs its customers not to place used oil containers into recycling but to place them into the trash

You might want to check you garbage pickup company as well

What's old is new again. ~20 years ago I bought 12-packs of Castrol at Costco.

Nowadays I normally buy by the pail, unless the 5L jug happens to be on sale for a better value.

The price of oil is all over the place.

For typical Mobil 1, 5w30 advanced/extended the cheapest seems to be the 5 quart jugs.

There are bigger sizes including up to a 55 gallon drum but they're all more expensive when you boil it down to a "per quart" basis. I don't fully understand that. Although maybe that's internet pricing and not what you'd get from an oil dealer.

The other weirdness is that I see Walmart's best price for the 5 gallon jug is if a person buys ONE jug. Multiples like 6 or 12 previously had a slight discount for the larer quantity when I bought in late winter, but now those multiples are more expensive than ONE jug. Guessing its supply chain issues caused by the virus....

It might be a game of getting the most weight packed into volume in a semi truck (increasing density) and the 5 gallon jugs waste more airspace.....if a person looks at CostCo's gallon of milk its certainly optimized for that over what a person buys in a supermarket....

He's clearly asking if anyone has purchased motor oil packaged like box wine (liquid in a thin plastic bag, inside a cardboard box). This type of packaging has been around for years. If you search for a specific and common grade of motor oil at NAPA online, you get result for everything from a single quart to a 55 gallon drum, with options in between.

OP, I've never bought a box because I can get oil cheaper in 5- qt containers on sale... the larger sizes don't seem to go on sale, which makes sense (small containers for weekend warriors you have to compete heavily for, larger ones for shops that prioritize service and employee time along with price). As an example, right now a single quart of NAPA's synthetic 5W-30 is $3.39 on sale, a 24 quart bay box (like what OP's asking about) is $4.17/ quart, and a 55- gallon drum is $4.64/ quart.

I've seen them, and they were priced competitively.

My problem is that every car I own uses a different grade of oil, so I would have to store several of them, and I wasn't willing to give up the room for it.

The biggest problem is secondary containers. Caterpillar did a study decades ago and found that gallon jugs (quarts are not common on machines usin 5-250 gallons of oil)were the cleanest form of engine oil. In the jug they were no different than say 55 gallon barrels, it was the pumps, people leaving vents off, and secondary containers contaminating everything. Even wiping out with a fresh rag was good practice but not sufficient. This study was instrumental in the totes with electronic metered dispensers you see now in many large dealerships.

There are some good(but $$) secondary containers such as oilsafe. They have a closing spout and a closing vent, both insuring that contamination from dust is kept a bay. They also eliminate funnels for the most part.

If you are still using your galvanized plews can or a funnel not stored in a funnel trap your adding a lot of dust/dirt in with your “clean” oil. 5 quart containers were instrumental in eliminating secondary containers for many but now they will have to come back.

Just wait until the outlaw quarts to be “green”

I bought a 12 quart box of Supertech FS 5w30 when it went under $20. It works fine if you get a cheap container to measure it in. I'll buy more if the price is right but I prefer the jugs.

yep most newer rides dont NEED 3k oil changes . they run cleaner and make less **** to trash the oil . 5k-6k is the new norm . also runs a real good oil filter and be happy in saving the oil changes and less waste .

No one recommends 3k anymore and hasn't for a long time. With full synthetics, 10k is the norm. 5k was 20 years ago

The boxes are hard to use in my opinion and every time I leave oil sitting around my dog ends up knocking it over so I try not to store it down low so 12 quart boxes would be hard for me to store also. I know that Havoline has the 6 quart boxes and they are a pain in the tail to use I personally prefer the plastic jugs my auto parts stores take those for recycling but I usually keep them. At the dealership we have the hoses that come down from the ceiling but I haven’t used those in years since I moved up from lube tech.

5 quart jug is the physical limit of weight and size I can reasonably pour into the vehicle fill port with semi-predictable accuracy.

What's a funnel trap? I googled it and all the hits were ways to make animal traps with funnels. Pretty sure that's not what was meant.

I have used the Havoline 6 quart containers sold at Wal-Mart. I ran their synthetic blend 10w-30 in my Subaru until I sold it. When I run out of my NAPA synthetic stash I have for all of my vehicles I had planned to go to the Havoline 5w-30 ProDS synthetic. They just lowered the price to $17.97 for the ProDS which comes out to $2.99/quart. I can buy the same ProDS at a couple of local stores by the quart for $4-$5 per quart. I had done some quick searching when I was considering the change to Havoline and found the consensus was that their synthetic was good stuff.

I say give it a try! I haven't seen 12 quarts bags but would certainly be interested if it's good oil at a good price. All of my vehicles currently use 5w-30; having a single grade of oil is convenient.

I'd love to switch to the large bag/box oil containers, but for some damfool reason when you do the math the stuff is a LOT more expensive in these containers than in the five quart jugs.

Is there a way an ordinary mortal could buy bulk oil for an actual ok-ish price?

Not really. It's usually not worth it for a small user for a couple reasons. Look for sales and buy a little ahead, keep it in factory containers. Bulk is good for fleet. I have 25 engines, I got away from it, some take different oil, extended changes are now normal.

It all depends on how much oil you will use in how many engines and how often you plan to change it.

The time value of the money used to purchase the oil, as well as the future price of the oil also enter into the equation. Another unknown is the cost of storage of any oil not used immediately after purchase.

It is an "I don't know" situation.

My Grandfather's barn and dad's shop was FULL of cut oil jug organization. W used them for everything: scoops, bins, loose parts trays, and I didn't know that you could BUY a funnel until I was maybe 12. It was sinful to throw away a plastic jug.

I thought the OP meant a case of 12 bottles....the correct term for this is Bag-in-a-box, and it's been around at least since the 80's...

if I had a choice, assuming it wasn't much more expensive, i'd stick with the 5 qt. jug, since that's what I put the used oil back in. kinda hard to re-fill a biab...also seems like a pain to empty as well.

Can you switch a few engines to use the same weight oil? I have done this with rotella 5w40 t6, it goes in a lot of my stuff and is fine for wet clutches.

We have been using the 6 gallon versions for several years. I currently have 10 different ones we use, 3 are High Mileage oils, the rest are full synthetics. I've got oils with the Dexos and Gen 2 certification in 0w20 and 5w30 viscosities, and then the 0w16. I have 0w20, 5w30, 5w30, and 10w30 in full synthetics. Less waste than quart bottles, less mess and garbage to.

It has frankly become like Baskin Robbins 31 flavors to cover all the specific certifications. The latest one is a 0w20 for the Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles, a Castrol product, Castrol Edge Pro LL TV FE 0w20, my cost $13.33 per liter. Still looking for an oil for the new BMW engines.

My township originally told me to recycle them, but after checking the DPW website, they now do not allow it, so I retract my previous post.

If someone's garbage company won't take them, they're passing the buck, but that's a different story...

We place on the ground next to the recycle bin, clearly marked drain oil.

Obviously the recycle company has a use for drain oil.

No one is questioning recycling the oil. That is done everywhere.

The issue is the bottles/jugs. They are just thrown away

i always drain my oil cans . i use the oil for latter top off halfway threw oil change as needed . or if i am doing a project that needs oil for lube i use some on it .

you would be amazed at how much oil you can get from 20-30 1qrt jugs when left to drain out . i have a 1gal jug now at work and have got almost 2qrt with maybe 30 1qrt jugs drained in of 15-40 oil for the diesel power plants we work on that its to hard to get the 1gal jug in to for fill .

when i can thi i do prefer the biggest option possible for the least amount of waste .
