Boxing in a staircase

I'm insulating the ground floor of my new 28ft x 30ft x 10ft 2-story garage.

The rough carpenter built the staircase with stringers underneath (Type 5), as opposed to what I was expecting with end plates on the treads and risers (Type 1). Mis-communication on my part. He did a good job, it's just different than I was expecting.

I plan to wall off and insulate the staircase for purposes of heating only the downstairs. The lack of the "diagonal end plates" on the treads and risers makes it tougher to install insulation, since there is no "continuous top edge".

I'm sure he cut the treads and risers with a skillsaw, and consequently the lengths are not precisely uniform, making it difficult to add a diagonal endplate now.

Trying to make the length of the treads and risers uniform is nearly impossible now. The staircase is too nice to tear out and start over.

Any ideas for boxing this staircase in?

I'd consider cutting the end of the treads off flush and build the walls right against the stringers. Once the walls are up (both sides ?) I'd nail/screw through the stringers and tie it all together to make the entire structure one.
