6" cans can take a BR40 but only if the trim allows it, so yes, definitely check inside the can for the actual recommendations.
BTW: BR stands for bulbous reflector. They have a beam spread of about 100°, and are designed for a softer look with more even light distribution. If your trim doesn't allow a BR40, and you can't get a high enough lumen output in a BR30 for your liking, you could try a PAR30. PAR stands for parabolic aluminized reflector, and they come in various beam angles all of which are less than 100°. Try one labeled "flood" which can 40° or 60°. It will deliver more light at your work surface/floor, though with less even distribution. Just a suggestion to consider.
