bracket for outdoor AC off foundation vs. ground pad

Some new houses use a steel bracket to support the outdoor unit off the foundation. I guess there are a couple reasons. I think a big one is it can be used to put the unit on the sloped side of a house with walkout basement which is popular in this area. Another is to get the unit off the ground. Apparently dogs peeing on units cause a lot of deterioration and banging into them with mowers doesn't help either.

Just wondering if there are reasons to think about hanging the unit if I have a reasonably level area where I can put the unit on the ground.

Other than the mentioned reasons, one off the ground will have slightly better airflow due to the lack of vegetation around the base. Properly installed, the raised platform will work well, but improper installation can easily result in failure of the anchor bolts and vibration being transmitted into the structure. IMO, if dogs and slope are not a concern I would leave it on the ground.

Around here, it is a FEMA requirement depending on if you are in the flood plain. Where those person's houses are at in the plain also determines the height of the unit.

It is also used when the HVAC contractor can finish installing the system and get paid before final grading is done.

New construction guy here - danski0224 is on the money.

Final grade precedes placement of outdoor unit or as a minimum grading of a dirt AC pad. Some builders have difficulty coordinating this for whatever reason so the wall mount brackets get deployed (and billed....).

coljar's comment about flood plain issues is one to consider, though any GC/HVAC contractor working where this is required should know the local regulations.

I'm a mile from the Atlantic Ocean, and two blocks from the Intracoastal Waterway, and have my compressor on an aluminum bracket off the ground. If there is any remote possibility that you could flood, even if it's not a local requirement, I would consider it money well-spent.

In my area, it is almost always about getting paid.

Most units are not really above the ground by much, the brackets are installed well before final grade is done and the elevation usually finishes within 6" of the finished grade. Bear in mind that someone has to lift the condenser up there.

Yes, walkouts and other significant slopes will force a wall mount bracket.

Brackets cost more to buy than a plastic condenser pad- then you have to install them. Now, with enforcement of silica dust hazards, drilling into concrete without the proper safety equipment is a problem for cheap employers. It has always been a problem for the employee because most employers do not care, nor will they properly fit-test for a respirator.

More often than not, the storebought welded ones are not really square, or there are imperfections in the concrete that result in the wall bracket being out of plumb and/or "loose".

I have always used long galvanized wedge anchors with a nut to hold the anchor to the concrete, and then 2 more nuts to plumb the bracket. Takes more time and expense, and a tract home contractor will not do this. My brackets are plumb and tight.

A tract home contractor will use Tapcons or the new large spiral type anchors that sort of look like Tapcons, but aren't. Sleeve instead of wedge anchors will be used. The bracket will be anchored directly to the foundation, but some use a washer between the foundation and bracket to deal with concrete form imperfections.

The wall brackets can be installed pretty much as soon as the forms come off and the backfilling is done.

The pad can't be set until the grade is close enough to done, or to a point where a couple of bags of stone will finish it. But, if the grade settles a bit, then the contractor is coming back to re-level the condenser. And then losing what little profit there is in residential new construction work.

I built a pressure treated wood base for the unit at my son's beach house. It is a sandy beach and the sand drifts in the wind, so if it is not elevated it will get buried. We regularly move sand back from the house with his Bobcat.

Heat pump condensers are elevated on a routine basis to keep them elevated above snow accumulation. Just another reason to wall mount.

I'm sure the same with a big traditional split 3-4 condenser.

I have not decided how I am going to do my two heat pumps with the place I'm doing now -- but they will not be touching the wall.

Hadn't considered several things mentioned like getting it in and paid before final grading. I had heard of vibration into the structure being an issue in some cases. Better air flow due to unit being slightly away from the building on a ground mounted unit seems more likely than reduced airflow from vegetation. We put some landscape rock around ours so no issue with vegetation or getting hit with mowers.

Settling can be an issue. I had to redo a retaining wall near my unit due to water flow and settling. Luckily I had a deck above right next to it and was able to suspend the unit while the work was done. Adjusted the grade to get water flowing away from the building and the unit. This is a walkout which presents some challenges for ground mounting.

On the new place I can ground mount so will go with that. Thanks for the inputs.

Yeltdog is right. I have a heat pump and I'm really glad it's not mounted on the wall. My HVAC contractor didn't care either way, but he was honest and said you would hear/feel it in the inside rooms. These heat pumps are really quiet compared to an AC compressor unit too. If it's mounted on a garage wall, then no big deal, but I have 2 bedrooms there. He used a cheap wireframe riser to get it off the ground with a plastic base. I didn't like the small plastic base and could see it shifting and sinking in no time. My large heat pump is a tall rectangle shape. So I had a pre-cast concrete steps company make me a 3' x 6' x 4" slab and I snuck it under the unit. I made it that large, so I had a nice place for my hoses too. It was a PIA to do after the fact, but I have the best of all worlds now....an elevated unit, a stable base, and it's not mounted to the house. I was able to easily coordinate this with the GC, excavator, landscaper & sider, since it was all the same person....me.

There are vibration isolators that can be placed under the unit.

Yes, putting the piece of equipment directly on the brackets that are attached to the wall can transmit vibration, but there are things that can be done to minimize that. Of course, extra stuff costs extra money :)

There are many details in construction that need to be hashed out along the way, and many people are willing to pay a little extra- if their desires can get through the builder to the sub and client.

Unfortunately, the builder and sub mindset is usually cheap, cheap, cheap.

I just can't get past how ridiculous most of them look; hanging from some cheesy looking brackets cantilevered off the foundation wall.

The first time I saw it, I was sure it was some sort of temporary arrangement...

lots of reasons mentioned to hang it. all valid. i hung mine and its a cheaper diy one. when that ramps up i can hear/feel low vibration noise through the wall out to about ten feet inside. not a sound outside. spend money on a good bracket with good sound isolators. I have an old house with non standard framing so that might be contributing to my noise. even if i out it on the ground i'd use something to get it up off the ground and still use some method to attach to the house with an arm in case it washed out and wanted to fall over.
