Hey folks,

I'm refurbishing a pre-exiting shop on the property I bought and I just replaced a rotted section of the top plate on an exterior wall. Since they constructed the wall with a triple top plate, I was unable to secure the studs to the new top plate using nails. I'd prefer to use a bracket instead of toenailing, but I'm not sure what bracket to use.

The wall with the new top plate is opposite the overhead garage doors and doesn't support any of the roof trusses. Would something like this work?

simpson makes some steel plates, available at lowes that are sized for this and screws are always an option.

Look for "Stud Plate Ties" on Mitek's site. Personally I'd toe-nail these and not bother though.

If you have the room...a 6" GRK-RSS screw is available that will penetrate the triple top and hit the end of the stud.

Another directional improvement would be to cut tight-fitting blocking that fits under the lowest top plate (as a quad thickness but built lower) on both sides of any stud that's "loose". Can always use construction adhesive to backup what you are doing as an additional strength improvement. A shorter RSS can be driven into the end grain from one side...they have very surprising strength even into end-grain with about 3" of thread engagement.
