There is in existing cement slab off the back of my garage I'm going to build a lean to over. Since the cement is existing i must set my posts on top of the slab. I've done a lot of searching and there aren't many options for 4x6 posts to surface mount but i found some i like. They are bordering on a little expensive and nobody stocks them around me. Menards can order them but the cost of freight is ridiculous. I can make them but i don't want to unless i have to. Suggestions are appreciated

Nobody else makes these? I like this design in particular. Everything else I've seen looks lighter duty. So are my only options to order them from menards or make them?

The steelwork is the easy part, its coming up with a coating so it isn't a rusty decaying mess in 5 years.

Price out some 2 part epoxy paint and the steel raw materials. Steel is higher priced than ever before.

Yeah i could get them powdercoated. I know I would have way more in time and materials than buying them. Just weird there are almost no other options.

Also a closer look says that they include the fastners, I can't see if it includes concrete anchors but it would seem so from relative sizes. It wouldn't be uncommon to pay $5-10 for the equivalent fastener kit depending on which grades and coatings you specify.

The local fab shop can beat that price for a square welded from 4 inch angle iron.
Be sure they drill staggered holes in the sides so the fasteners don't hit at the same height.

A little epoxy paint and you are good to go.

If the stress is all vertical you do not need all that height.
Just a collar to keep it from sliding around.
1 1/2 lag screws will be enough.

Yet another member not understanding location often matters.

Anyway, not sure is near Three Rivers, WI.

Watching his house as I type.

not sure - Looks like you need to wash the truck, put the dog on a diet and close the curtains a bit tighter after dark.

O - And cleanup your search history in the bedroom desktop and go to Confession :shocking:

Just my suggestions.

Keep some airspace under bottom end of post to avoid wicking.

I like the Menards unit myself, but would put somekinda elevating foot between steel mount the wood ... Even just like a 1" long cut of galv 2" sch 40 + pipe would work seems to me.

There are other heavyish sturdy solid looking options, but not really cheaper than the Menards.

The menards one has a few things going for it, it's already powdercoated, and includes hardware. If i make them it's steel price plus coating of some sort and hardware. Plus my time to make it or labor cost to have it done.

The hardware included is one guys opinion.

I suppose the 4 little screws are just to initially "pin" it while you complete the job.

You will probably end up buying aftemarket at least the two anchors into concrete.

And drilling the post for the throughbolts and pounding the bolt through will be a bit of PIA due to non oversize holes in steel.

Don't FU the end thread pounding them through from misalignment.

Shipping was kind of expensive but now i do see ship to store for free. If that's the case I'll probably order them. Estimated arrival at my local menards is @12 days though

You should be able to mostly complete the job before having brackets in hand.

Layout EXACTLY where post bottoms sit on slab, and figure out somekinda bracing to temp hold them in position.

Think it through.

Finish entire structure.

When brackets come, carefully jack up beam by each post individually one by one 1/4" and install brackets.

General ida anyway.

A few more hours of jacking around, but just sayin you do NOT have to wait.

Be aware you will have no anchorage against wind uplift though.

So maybe, do whole framing job but do roof sheeting AFTER brackets install.

Ordered. I'm gonna cut chunks of this composite deck board to put under each post to get them up a little

Just curious, why 4x6?

Is there any chance of the posts being bumped by something that can move them? Truck/mower etc?

If not, Id go with the plastic bases available for 4x4 posts.

Why make a composite deck spacer when the real ones are like 8$.

Because i have @ dozen treated 4x6 posts i removed from inside my pole barn. (There were horse stalls in there i removed) i also have a stack of treated 2x8 boards that were the sides on the stalls. And i have free cut off pieces of composite deck board. A.c.a.p as cheap as possible. Reduce reuse recycle. Also I'm a cheap ***

They came in. Super overkill but that's my usual style. I'm not a carpenter or builder
