I'm finally going to add a porter cable pancake compressor to my garage. Along with it I'll get either a brad nailer or a finish nailer. I'll be doing light work with it. Maybe baseboard, building a few garage cabinets, etc. one is 16 gauge, the other 18 gauge. Any reason to choose one over the other?

I have both, and use them both daily in my work. I use the 16GA straight finish nailer for such things as baseboard, crown, door/window trim, cabinet assembly. I use the 18GA brad nailer for much smaller projects, such as detail on wood columns, detail on drawer fronts, etc..

If I wanted an "all purpose - general use - finish nail gun", I'd go with the 16GA.

FYI - Home Depot sells a pancake compressor/nail gun kit that has both the 16GA and 18GA guns included.

sounds like a finish nailer would better suit your needs.
If i had only one or the other, i would rather have the finish nailer, at least for my use.
