I've been doing some research on making a sheetmetal brake. I've got a design down, but the hinge section is where I need some help. I want it as close to the pivot as possible while still having full range. I've done several google searches and have seen piano hinge (don't think that is going to be strong enough), pipe and pins, and heavy duty door types. My ultimate goal is to be able to bend 16 gauge 20-24" long. Post any pictures you guys might have. Thanks!

Have you seen the hinges they use on the magnetic brakes? I believe the patents with pictures are online...

Unless this is one of those "I just want to do this" projects, stop wasting your time. The effort to replicate a decent brake is a poor use of your time.

I'm sure that if your patient, you will find a decent brake cheaper than you could make one.

I'm the epitome of the DIY guy...but that is one tool I'll buy.

Robert, thanks, I will have to check this out.

Ddawg, I don't think I could buy one for what I could make one. I have a lot of heavy angle and other scrap that was given to me. I at least want to look at the option. If I deem it not to work for my needs I have metal for another project.

Koditten, I looked at that build before posting. There really isn't a good picture of the hinge detail. It looks as though the hinge is just on the out side of the bending plate. With the size I plan on bending I think there needs to be something in the middle to keep the bending plate from flexing. Thanks for the help though.

Take a look at the HF brake before you build, it is a good example of how to keep the leaves from flexing. If you install a center hinge it only shortens the width you can bend. The hinge pin is on center with the bed and bending leaf. That you tube vid. shows that.

Have a look at the way the HF clamp leaf can be moved to and fro....good for different thicknesses. Look for Dave Gingery's brake book, he shows all the basic details, that is what I looked at when I built mine a long time ago.
