Im wondering what brands have one, and whats the % off they are.

I know snap on, Mac and and Matco have them, but any other companys do it.

My dad said Craftsman used to do Student sets for a school he went to back in teh late 80's.

Cornwell does also. Cman was running 20% off as well but it seemed to be for a limited time (stupid). IR also has their own. Even companies that dont advertise, i'm sure if you called they may have a program set up.

IIRC craftsman has one, but it's very very small.

snapon has one that averages out to be basically 50% off.

Basically about 42%.

matcos can go upwards of 80% around christmas.

Mac's is right about 50%.

All seem to have certain limitations on what/how much you can buy. I know there was NO 50% off modis.

One sears store claimed 20% off refurb only (as far as power tools)

None of the sets or kits are that much of a deal since they will contain a lot of fluff you wouldn't have bought from them otherwise.

SK should have something going. I would definitely cherry pick 1 or 2 from here and there.

Tool trucks for sure offer single item discounts. As I earlier stated, stay AWAY from most of the sets. The value may not be there. Especially since none of the companies make a superior tool value in every category.

The sets are the main marketing trick to build a loyal return customer. Get the specialty items/power tools while you can.

NAPA has one. 40% off most items. Most of their hand tools are Gearwrench. They have a very extensive tool catalog.

For hand tools with Snap On, you pretty much have to buy sets. They are not well laid out. SO student program is very limited and the discounts can vary greatly, but for the most part it's around 50%. Matco has various discounts on everything, but they run specials also that may discount more than usual. Mac is just straight up 50% off anything you want. Not sure what Cornwell and GW student programs are like. And I have no idea about wright. Ingersol Rands discounts are great if you need air tools.

The school I am with is signed up with Snap On.

They allow certain tools and toolboxes. Well one toolbox they allow is what I have. I emailed them to see if instead of the top and bottom (which I have) if I would be able to get the middle cabinet (2 drawers) instead.

They emailed me a vague email about how they support students and never answered my question.

Snap On Industrial is 50-60% off for just about everything in the catalog. Much better deal.

I used to grab the snap on catalog (and price list) make a list of individual items I wanted, and then go ask the rep "how much?". For hand tools I could usually buy individual pieces at discount no problem. He used the same computer system as all the other reps for students. Almost always bought individual items or small sets. When I say small, I mean like a set of screw drivers only, or the air ratchet and sae/metric swivel impacts. Never a set of mixed pliers and hammers and wrenches.

Matco definitely lets you buy individual pieces, but you have to buy them online. I recall 1 order being for a single $6 impact socket.

Far from the truth in my experience from the past few years. Everything i wanted was pretty much half off, no matter how small or random. I cannot recall anything I wanted ever being off limits or even significantly more than half off. I do know that some of the huge monster boxes are off limits though and there is a total dollar amount limit.

Which are you referring to? SO, I'm assuming. We were told we only got major discounts on whatever is in the SEP handout, which is about 20 pages. It comes with a price sheet attached, discounts are anywhere from 10%-60%. After talking to several guys on here about the SEP, it seems like it varies by region, especially on the pricing. Looks like these prices are set by the regional sales reps. Total dollar amount here is $5k. I believe Macs is also $5k.

There are a lot of things that plug into the wall that are not discounted. Your screw drivers wrenches and sockets are mostly counted though.

Stay away from financing as well.

We can spend 7,500 with Snap-On at list. Which comes out to around 3500-4000 with the discount. I was a little disappointed with this as I thought I could spend 7500 total not 7500 worth of stuff at full list price. We don't have to buy the sets. I go to the Snap-On SEP website and you can buy one single item if you want to. We get a discount on the ethos but nothing higher than that as far as diagnostics go. We can buy one roll cabinet and one top chest. You can't buy the same stuff over and over, you can only buy one of each item.

Everybody pretty much has it pegged. With Cornwell, though, you have to find a tool truck since they are the ones that decide the discount. I want to say it's 30%.

Sometimes the individual dealers offer their own discounts.

When I was getting started I remember that our Mac guy would set the basic tools and sets that had been traded in or repo'ed aside for students/newbies and give them to us for little of nothing.

How does the NAPA discount work? Does it apply to their toolboxes/carts?

That must just apply to the SEP program. At my campus we have an onsite SO Industrial Rep there four days a week and the only think that he had ever told me I wouldn’t get the discount on was a very expensive box that I was just dreaming about. They do offer us the choice of buying sets but we don’t have too which I have not done only single items. Our only limit is we cannot buy doubles and if you choose to start a credit line its only good to $7500 but you still can buy more w/ cash.

Wish we could by more. I went to the SEP site and was adding things to my cart and a pop up came up and said I had reached my limit of 7500, this was with only like 3800 in my cart. I don't have SO credit and pay with my debit card for everything from SO, so the limit isn't just the SO credit line limit for us.

Sounds like you should get what you really want from them. And then pick and choose what you want from the others.

Here is an email that I got from the local NAPA T&E district sales rep. I would imagine the tool boxes have some kind of discount, just depends on what line up it's in..........

Brandon,

Absolutely we offer Discounts on Tools & Equipment to Vo Tech Students as
long as they are in a Current Program. Bring your Student ID Card to any
NAPA Parts store, (over 6000 Nationwide) and you will receive Discounts up
to 40% OFF on our NAPA Hand & Service Tool Lines. Line Codes of "NHT",
"SER", "VG", and some "BK". All Tools have a Discount, but some have more
than others.

If you have any questions on any of our Tools please give me a call or drop
me an email.

Thank you

Let's also not forget recent threads of students going "hog wild" right off the bat, only to turn around and take a big loss.

Even though the savings are a great 1 time opportunity, some times they may not be so wise. For example, most of the basic chrome may not be the wiset investment right off the bat.

Then again, there are a few cordless tools and air hammer that I wish I woulda got while I had a chance.

I have no regrets on not purchasing a box at that time, since there are more affordable deals out there.

My biggest regrets came from the specialty tool area of matco. Had a sweet wish list wrote up during christmas time but procrastinated. As the new year rolled around, I was disgusted with the new marked up prices. Shoulda jumped when I had a chance.

This is very true man. It is so hard to resist. But I refuse to go into this career several thousand in debt in just tools. There definitely will be some regret in not taking full advantage of all of these savings while in school. But if you can't afford, then you shouldn't do it. I have spent a good amount with these student discounts, but I always pay cash. I save up a lot of money from doing side work (extra income), and make large purchases every semester.

I have put a lot of focus on getting specialty tools. I don't think buying used test equipment, such as guages is a good idea. We will always be able to buy good chrome used at good prices. Even with the discount, I can't justify buying chrome, it is still really expensive. My craftsman sockets have held up well for years, and will continue to do so, until I can afford better. There are great wrenches out there for really reasonable prices. I use Toptul GW, and an assortment of quality specialty wrenches. If you have the time, it is possible to find great deals on tools other than "off the truck". I have acquired a lot of quality tools, without financing anything, while being on limited income.

Currently I am saving for the big IR set.

Yea i'm referring to SO. We had a rep come to our school like once a month maybe? Anyway most people just went on the normal SO website, found what we wanted, then e-mailed our rep for a invoice, look it over and then order it. He would then have it all shipped to wherever you want. It seemed as if NO hand tools were off limits and were all exactly 50% off. I never bought any air tools, electric tools, or toolboxes from them. I might just gather all of my SO stuff into a group and take a picture.

Right on. We may have been told wrong. The SO rep rarely makes appearances at our school. I looked at hand tools on the site today briefly, and there is a lot more stuff on there, but it didn't look like everything. It didn't make sense that you could only order from the SEP catalog, as the other brands let you order anything.

I saw the jacks have a part number that begins with "NLE". There was no mention of that line in the email I got. If they have any discount, I'm willing to bet it's around 20%. No way to know for sure unless you ask. I would contact an actual tools and equipment rep. Here's the link to how I found this guy here in Kansas City..........http://www.napatoolsandequipmentofkc.com/tool_catalog
You'll just need to find one in your area. I tried a google search for Napa T&E in Baltimore, and didn't see anything though.

Suggest that this thread get back to the original poster's question: what brands offer a student discount?

Here's my contribution... While speaking the Mac Tools representative who administers the tool program on a national level (a woman whose name eludes me), I inquired about Proto tools and yes, these are available through the student program. Don't know what discount but assume 50% like Mac.

So, what other companies offer a student discount? Speciality companies in particular. I'm about to finish my technical education in May, and want to squeeze a few more orders in.

At my school we have a SO rep on campus, we have lists of what we can order from him at our price which on avg is about 50% off list. We can only order things off that list and only one of each item or set, so I can't buy two sets of Wrenchs..... I've found I can get better deals on SO on craigs list which is where I've gotten most of my snappy stuff

Weird. I looked on craigslist a lot also. In almost every case it was much cheaper to buy brand new stuff with the discount than it was buying what scraps of used stuff i could find.

Around here there are so many guys who graduated, bought 10k of snappy stuff from the school, didn't get a job, now need to unload it as fast as they can to pay back loans etc. That's where I get the best deals
