Branick Clamshell Strut Spring Compressor!

Hi,
Was looking for a Clamshell Compressor for my struts on my Honda Element.

Wanted something better than HF or OTC for the money.

Found this well used Branick Clamshell for what a HF would cost and bought it.

The screw looks well worn but I guess that could be replaced, I hobby weld and machine so should be able to refurb this if needed.

Looks like it has a LOT more strength than what is out there today and the Honda struts are not that big really.

Has anyone used one like this before? Thoughts?

Should pay for its self on the first strut?

grease the threads, they're way easier to use if you reduce the amount of friction you have to fight.

they're also a lot easier to use if you can convince someone else they're fun, and do it for you

After looking at the pics better, I think I can just chase the threads with a die...

Wire brush and be good to go!

Now, if I can just fight the urge to tear down and paint it!

Branick are the best spring compressors I have used. You shouldn't use that one though unless you replace the screw. These store a lot of potential energy and when they fail (usually at face level for some reason), they can kill you. With the abuse these things get (driven with an impact etc) and not knowing prior history of owners I would leave it well alone. I have seen a 2.5" coil spring fly though 5/8 drywall and 1/2 ply sheathing to end up outside a shop after a failure.

Being a Marine Engineer, I think I'll be fine!

If you use it under water, the hydraulic drag would probably keep you safe if it failed. It wouldn't fly as far under water...
