I need to attach a female style garden hose attachment to a nearby water supply (NYC Apartment - no access to a hose). My bathroom sink cold line is a male 3/8 compression style fitting. I went to home depot and got a 3/4 x 1/2 bushing and a 1/2 x 3/8 FIP fitting. (1st pic). But the 3/8 FIP fitting wont thread onto 3/8 compression fitting. It's a different thread type. What can I get to make the connection?

Another option is to use a compression style adapter and connect directly to the clear tubing for the water connection (2nd pic). But I can't get the ferrule into the tubing.

Go back to HD and get an aerator adapter. They have all sorts of them. They screw into the aerator and leave you with a hose connection in addition to the aerator.

^ This also gives you hot + cold.

If you want a more permanent hose, underneath the sink a garden hose is going to be overkill and (as you have found) you will need to do some plumbing. You can go with a smaller hose, like off a sink sprayer. I needed a setup like this once in an apartment a long time ago (I can't remember why.) but made a small hose that screwed into a tee that I added on to the compression connector under the sink.

The bathroom sink isn't installed right now. But there is a stand alone bathtub with a tub filler in the bathroom that's functional - will the aerator adapter attach to that?

Don't ask.
You can get adapters that replace the aerator on many faucets. There may be a couple different sizes.

To connect to a 3/8 male compression fitting you need a 3/8 female compression fitting which typically will be on a hose, Cut the hose and insert a barbed fitting with 3/8 Male pipe threads.

Sometimes bathtub fillers will have internal threads so you can thread a hose in there. Most uppity brands won't have that. You can easily feel in there with your finger to see if there are threads.

Here is the hose I rigged up. I think its a dishwasher supply hose, around 5 feet long with 3/8" fittings on each end. They have rubber gaskets so they mate up to compression connectors. I then added a bunch of brass of the shelf from Home Depot to add the valve to control things. (I just remembered we had a very large humidifier and had to fill it with 5 gallons of water every other day, so we rigged this hose up to do that conveniently without needing to use buckets and make a total mess.)

This is my setup to get from 3/8 comp to 3/4 MHT. In this case, it's a 18" hose so I can use a pressure gauge and see it outside a base cabinet. The hose is 3/8 comp to 1/2 comp then the adapter is 1/2 MIP to 3/4 MHT

BTW - If you need a real 'garden hose', I think you will be disappointed with anything coming out of a compression fitting. The water still needs to go through that small oriface and you won't get anywhere the flow you do out of a real garden hose. (If you use a 3/8" hose, like the one I made above, you are going to get close to max.)

Although, if flow isn't important for you and the garden hose is, some dishwasher hoses will have a 3/8" compression connector on one end and a bona fide hose connector on the other:

Let us know. We'll hook you up.

Also curious to see what you need the hose for. (We're hoping its for wet t-shirt contests on the balcony, but I expect you are going to tell us its for something else.)
