Brass Hammer Resto

Over the weekend I picked up a brass hammer at the flea market to use around the shop but after looking at it and wondering what it would look like cleaned up I think I might have got carried away. Here is what it looked like when I brought it home.

And after sanding and polishing and staining the handle, I am very happy with how it came out but I guess now It will probably not get used.

yeah i was wondering about that when i started so i used a mask while sanding with the da, most of it was block sanding and hand sanding.

That's not really brass. Some would call it beryllium bronze. It's almost as hard as mild steel, and quite a bit tougher. Something like that wouldn't be used as a "soft face" hammer like a brass one. Rather, it would be used in an environment where sparks could be dangerous (or perhaps in a place where a steel hammer could cause issues with a magnetic field). That's a VERY expensive hammer you've got there.

Thanks Guys, I guess now I need to find another one to actually work with, Decided that this one will find a new home in the drawer with the restored body hammers that dont get used.

Thankfully you did some research first. Dangerous material. An old friend of the family died a horrible death after working with this material, albiet for many years & before OSHA stepped in.

That is a hammer made for use in an environment where a spark caused by a steel hammer could cause an explosion.
