i have a snap on 2 pounder and the proto 4 pounder. The Proto is a great tool. You get what u pay for and there is no such thing as a good cheap brass hammer. The proto 4 pounder is over 100 bucks but the 1.5 and 2 pounders are cheaper 40 and 60 I think.

Brass is a copper and zinc alloy. It can be mixed with many other metals like aluminum which is kind of like hardening, it produces a hard outer surface or lead which makes it softer.

Since brass is mainly available today as recycled because it is very easily separated from other metals, it may be wise to buy brand name hammers rather than mass produced products from companies who's interest is only making quick profits.

I would like to buy or make a brass hammer but I'm not sure why.

I have a copper and hide faced Thor mallet that I use a lot. Apart from looking cool, does a brass hammer do something better than my copper one? I'm guessing it's slightly harder. Anything else?

I have the 2lbs brass snappy. Anybody know of a real automotive application where a brass hammer is an absolute must? I can't.

My Snappy hammer was $0, but I think retails close to $100. I actually did some work on a Ford pickup several years ago and found the hammer laying on a leaf spring. I told the owner about it assuming it was. He said he had some exhaust work done weeks ago in PA (we are in Ohio). So that is the story of how I acquired that.
